now this one obviously isnt for me :D (old !Removed! no hair flatulent incontenent pathalogical liar)

my girlfriends son has just turned eighteen and obviously wants to make my life a misery by joining the driving community and sharing my drive ( over my twitching corpse obviously )

so ime looking for some help from any of you ladies and gents on the best quotes for young drivers that you have had.

the quotes that he has had so far have all involved either me remortgaging the house ( no chance )

or him selling a kidney and spleen ( possibility )

thanks for your help ladies and gents

Three years running norwich union have given me the best quote!

Has he done pass plus?

CB

he hasnt even passed his test yet

me being the old !Removed! i am i have told him not to aim to high for his first car and get some idea on what his costs are going to be ie insurance etc

he works hard for his money and he has had 3 quotes of between £2300 - £2500 on a 1.0 corsa (another reason its not sharing my drive) when he has passed his test. which i think are pretty ridiculous but then again we all know that 18-25 are classed as the antichrist to insurers.

thanks for the advice mate keep em coming

Tell him to do the pass plus (it's the equivalent of 1 years NCB).

Get a cheap shed under 1.0

Do little mileage (3,000)

Fit an alarm

Don't mod it

expect insurance over £2,000

Wait 3 years, get a good car

it's about 10% off ..

Also DON'T do the 10 month accel schemes .. it's more expensive per month, and have clauses about only valid with them (and then the premium goes up the year after).

Also pay the insurance in one lump .. most of these places charge about 25~30% APR (it's better to get an 0% credit card/ cheap bank loan and put it on that).

Wise words there. It may be a case that you take the insurance out and have him as a named driver for his first year or he has it in his name but puts you, your partner, his grandad/grandma down... Basically as named drivers who have had years of driving. May reduce it a bit

Some places now include NCB for names drivers .. but you have to ask, and not all do.

It's actually better to put him as "Main" and then an older woman (his mum) as a "Named 2nd" driver ..

Already mentioned, but bunging low risk drivers on as named really does help.

I have heard a theory that part of the insurance risk calculation is based on the number of claims people that are similar to you make on the car you want to insure. So the really popular 'first cars' such as Corsas, Fiestas etc can be more expensive than some of the less obvious choices. Try getting quotes on a Fabia 1.2 or something too and see if it works :)

Thats exactly what my insurance is now, For me alone it was about £1900 TPFT! :o

Added my Mum and Dad as named drivers and it saved me £500

btw, that works with any of the Admiral Group; Admiral, Bell, Elephant.co.uk, Diamond

My 1st yr insurance was £900 TPFT on a 1993 5dr Corolla 1.3, that was in my Dads name with me as a named driver, worked out cheapest for me.

Also, this maybe of use to you:

Clicky

I had my insurance for my first car with Tescos.... £600 I think it was, fully comp... although young lads tend to suffer more than 21 year old females!

My insurance is due for renewal in March - the quote is good, but I still stuck Rich on as named driver - it went down almost £50!

Hello,

I only passed my test last spring, and so am far from the fount of all knowledge, but I can tell you what I found out. I'm a medical student in London, and needed a car to get to different hospitals, and yes, I knew that it would cost an arm and a leg because of the location and my age.

Pass plus helped a great deal, as some have said, many offer a 1yr NCB equivalent for it, but check that your insurer will accept it. As soon as you go over £1000 for the quote, it'll be worth your while financially, and you'll be a better driver to boot.

Price wise, I found Tesco and Norwich Union to be the best. Tesco were very helpful on the phone, while NU were so-so - I'd guess because of the huge size of the company and the logistical problems of having half your staff in India, and the rest in the UK. They promised me an additional discount which I later found out did not exist, but they had to honour it - so naturally I took it.

Anyhow, my insurance renewal is not too far off, and I'm thinking of putting my other kidney on eBay, but I still would have got the car - I love my Corolla!

Hope this helps,

David.

I've taken insurance alone for the 1st time this year (20 years old) and it cost me around £1k with www.elephant.co.uk with all my mods declared and no NCB. I reckon elephant is your best bet!

I first insured with a young driver specialist called Tangent South West.

Not got any details for them but you could google it.

Elephant have made me happy year on year  I'll be going with Elephant for the forseeable future

My 1st 2 cars were corolla twincams (as the avatar suggests :D ) and i paid £850 fully comp in my mum's name with CIS. I've got a 306 GTI-6 now, which i've insured under my own name (age 19, no ncb) for the 1st time, and i paid £1650 tpft with bell (gotta spend my student loan on something!)

with 1 year's ncb, this should come down to about £1100 (bear in mind it's a group 16 car)

Hiya,

My sister is currently in the same situation. She has a 1.1 206 and is still learning. The cheapest quote we could find was suprisingly through the RAC, I think fully comp it was just over a grand.

My 1st year of Insurance was with Endsleigh on a 1996 1.1 dead basic Fiesta - on TPFT cover it would've cost around £1400 (If I can remember correctly as this was back in 2003) but as I did Pass Plus it was brought down to around £750 which I paid on monthly installments..I was 18 at the time, me as the Policyholder and only driver, kept on the Road & as I work in Motor Insurance I am classed as higher risk as I "know how it works" so that bumps up the price.

I changed halfway through to a 1.0 brand new Yaris T3 and it only increased by something like £36!!!

Tell him to get a bicycle for a few years, and then do his test at 21. Much cheaper by that time... :D

I think you'd have more chance of convincing an 18 year old to have a s*x change to get the insurance cheaper than wait for 3 years for a car.

Me being a 17 year old in desperation of a car would agree with kev here!

I also found my quote lowest with either RAC (£1.5k odd) or zenith (£1.3k) for a yaris 1.3 SR in my name TPFT!
