What Car To Get?

Right, here's the (potential) situation.

I want a faster, better handling car. My gf wants a safe car that's practical and good on mpg.

We have about £7k to spend between us.

The car must be a good compromise between performance and economy, quite a high ride height (my gf takes oap's out in the car for her job) and practical (oap equipment carried in the back of the car), good handling and safe (ABS, Stability control a bonus).

Any suggestions?

I doubt he'd get both for 7k... not two decent examples anyway.

An Audi A6 Avant 1.8 T Estate?

Too big. Sorry should have said small-ish car.

2 cars are not an option either.

Mkii Aristo V300.

A what?!

That's too big? Blimey - you've got a tough one trying to fulfill all those criteria! I don't envy you!

Well practical-ish. I thought a Golf Tdi with seats folded down would fit the bill. But I'd prefer a clio 172!

2k on a mk1 MR2 would be mint .. and I'd not wanna spend more that 5k on a volvo if OAP's are going to be in it all day

Aristo V300.

Think the Lexus GS300... Mkii one (quad front and tail lights) with a supra 3.0 twin turbo engine.

its very fast, very comfortable, smart and not too pricey either!!!

the import version of the Lexus GS is called a Toyota Aristo.

If he's thinking Golf/Clio proportions, then he won't want an Aristo Charlie - nor will the missus.

I didn;t see anything to do with size in the original post :(

I'd not say an aristo is a particularly big car? Its "mid" saloon sized.. a la E class/5 series.

I'd be fine with it, the gf not so much........

I've got to come up with a viable alternative or we'll end up geting a clio diesel :ffs:

You're having a laugh right? Compared to a Golf/Clio, it's gigantuan.

Sorry, forgot to mention it can't be too big.

Octavia may be worth a look. Leon Tdi maybe too.

Only for some reason some muppet has put a Lexus Badge on it ;)

Caz a Clio doesn't even qualify as a "small" car :D

What about a Fabia vRS or Ibiza Tdi?

You can chip the current Fabia vRS up to 180Bhp for about

£400/500.

You can pick up a vRS for about 8K (over here anyway)

Ok It's just a little bigger than perhaps you would have set out for but in relative terms fuel economy is fantastic, surprisingly fast with ABS, climate control and many other extras. As usual comes with mercedes excellent reputation and reliability.

Seriously I got one about 100k miles and used it right up to 140k miles it was still going !Removed! strong when it was sold too

Clicky

i'd say Audi A4 Avant, im not arguing with Steve about the IS200 - only the 6 cylinder engine is thirsty around town, and the seats dont fold (with intrusive hinges, its annoying)

It really depends, i think a clio is too small for what you want, the golf may be okay, but im not a fan... what about a Seat Leon - you could probably pick up a 5 door Cupra, same chassis as the golf, a decent engine etc.?

Obviously you want a CTS! Duh :D

You could go for a Volvo T5. Very fast, spacious, safe, decent MPG, and you'd have about 5 grand left to buy something more special for yourself to have fun in.
