Corolla 1.4 Vvti Mpg

Hi guys,

New to the forum and hope you can help. I bought a 52 plate Corolla 1.4 VVTi T2 as I was impressed with the reviews etc

Very smooth, quiet, lovely car to drive, but one thing i'm really disappointed on, i only get 28 - 30 mpg from it. I have measured it by filling up and working out by how much mileage the car has done from the tank, it tallys with the onboard computers figure of 30 mpg.

It's all town driving, and i drive it very smoothly. (ie I DON'T drive aggresively with a heavy foot)

Is this right? I was hoping to get 38+ mpg from it...

ps the car has done 38K on the clock

Same here, mine is 1.6 and I get 28-30MPG if only driving in town with some aggression ;)

I think if you see people here saying they get 35-40+ in average because they drive on the motorway alot, mine can easily go up to 37 if i travel on the motorway.

My average speed doesn't exceed 20Mph according to the computer :P

I've got a 1.4 colour collection which has only done about 1,600m so is still using more fuel until the engine has totally bedded in, but the comp is showing 39mpg which is a combination of town and motorway driving !!!

I don't know whether its just me, but I find that if I change my foot position on the accelerator, it has quite an impact on the fuel consumption - if I have my foot further forwards (so that the pressure on the pedal is from the middle of my foot), then the fuel consumption increases, but if I drive with the tips of my toes, or with my foot pointing outwards at an angle and my big toe putting most of the pressure on the pedal, I can get 5-10mpg fuel consumptin better as indicated on the real time mpg calculator! Maybe my pedal is just a bit over sensitive to small pressure changes or something, or maybe moving my foot just makes me less lead footed subconsciously, but I haven't figured it out :)

I've a 1.6 Auto - and my MPG around London is rarely above 25mpg. Like the others here, motorway driving is much better, with economy over 40mpg if I'm careful.

About the sensitive throttle - I would agree, and this can sometimes cause some unnecessary revs and is particularly a problem when reversing, but still not a major one if you are careful.
