Another Warranty Question

It's comming up to a year since I have had my yaris and the other day I recieved a document in the post about extending my warranty.

It's the usual Toyota warranty for one year for £320 (I'm not sure if I can haggle on this price - anybody?) and would also include a £20 gift voucher to be used with buying accesories or a service.

I have been on the RAC website and worked out that the same cover would cost me £125 (Linky)

So that would mean that I'm paying £195 for a years warranty - Which doesn't sound to bad.

However my car isn't brand new and I didn't buy it brand new either.

It's an 51 reg (2001) and has been regulary serviced at every 10k. I brought it around this time last year and I am just wondering whether it is worth the £195 warranty for a car that's comming upto being 5/6 years old?

So what do you guys think? I remember that Em had the same predicament and I believe that you paid for it in the end?

But due to the fact of me not buying my car brand new is it worth it ?

Wasnt me hun, my car has 2 years of the original warranty left, its only a year old! I've never had to buy warranty... (I did buy roadside assistance from Toyota though, thats probably what you're thinking of)

£200 is still a lot of money to shirk out, and even then, it wont cover everything will it?

I say leave it mate, save the £200 and stick in in the bank and if you do have a problem with the car, you have an instant £200 to use - and if not, you have an instant £200 to use! ;)

I was offered the Warranty when my car turned 3 years old... didn't bother.

The only things that you'd need the warranty for are expensive things... Gearbox failure, clutch failure, engine failure... but those three are highly unlikely and if they are are only likely when serious mileage with poor servicing is done.

Things like suspension can be done at decent garages for not much... then brakes, tyres, etc aren't covered and any squeeks and rattles at 3 years is acceptable... and if not, is easily fixed by yourself.

So far Iv had no need for the warranty at all (would run out in June if I had it) so IMO it's not worth it.

I doubt I would go for it either, your car has been regularly serviced at the correct intervals and altho it's coming up to being 5/6 years old from what I see on your garage it hasnt got an excessive mileage for it's age either which is another factor. If it was higher then I might be more inclined to possibly take it as some people feel the higher the mileage the more could go wrong, but then Clarky has done over 108K and had no problems so that also weighs up the argument a bit ;)

Cheers for the advice guys ...... much appreciated  !

It's pointing towards 'no' at the minute.

I don't think that I have a high millage at 59k to worry about yet, and like you guys have said the yaris is a reliable car and it has been looked after/serviced regularly.

If anything does go wrong I'm sure Toyota will try and wriggle out of it anyway, and TBH you have got to expect a few things to go wrong with the car one day.

100k+ here we come trouble free  !

And £320 better off - although I'll have to get breakdown cover.

I agree with the others. It's a licence to print money. Keep the £200 in a high interest account and call it your "car fund" or something. Add a little if you can to that amount as the car gets older and leave it at that.

As for breakdown cover, can't you just join Club Toyota for £59 as that includes RAC assistance worth a lot more than that?

Iv got the Club Toyota cover... think it was £40. It's full RAC cover plus one or two other benefits, so it's very much worth it since normal full RAC cover is about £120!

Buy a warranty from an independent place. You don't need a Toyota one!

Actually I have a question. I bought my car from CarGiant.... big mistake.... its got NO SERVICE HISTORY. Anyhow, there's a club Toyota sticker in it, and apparently because its an 04 plate it still has Toyota warranty on it until September this year, because the car was original registeres in September 04.

Anyway, I've obviously got no documentation saying its under warranty, the Toyota dealership just said it must still be under warranty.

I bought a new service book.... its obviously got no stamps in it. I'm sure it must have been serviced in the past. Do you think the Toyota Club sticker means that they must have serviced it? Any ideas on finding out how to track down where it was serviced so I can get my stamps?

Have the place you bought the car from originally not got any of the service history?

How many miles has it done? what year is it?

Totoya dealerships will usually have a record of what car has been serviced, but with the main dealers being different chains (Inchcape, Listers, etc..), they may not all be linked?

Cargiant cars are usually ex lease cars. They sell them as no service history, but sometimes you get lucky.

My sisters Golf came from there with no paperwork. One call to VW HQ and we found it had the major services at VW main dealer, and we assume the oil changes were done by a back street place as there was nothing further on the system but the oil looked fresh.

I would personally call Toyota HQ and then take the car for a major service, and go from there...

The Club Toyota sticker is supplied by Toyota with all new cars and it does not mean that it has been serviced by Toyota...............Sorry to dissapoint you.

Why did you not check the service history before you bought the car and adjust the price accordingly?

Cargiant don't usually haggle on price, but are a lot cheaper than main dealers to start with..
