My yaris has done 180,000 miles and still going strong aprat from the engine malfuction light being on, the toyata dealership says it costs £650 but also say my car with this amount of milage is only worth £660. The car seems to drive fine- is there something cheap that I can do or would you advise ignoring it?

this is my first posting hope it is not a silly question

An AFM hey .. hmm, what type is it, hot wire, flap?

Maybe a clean with carb cleaner could get the sensor cleaned and working proper.

Good god - thats a massive mileage! Well done!

Personally Id just give the airflow sensor a good clean and try a cheap and cheerful induction kit

thanks for your reply, as a non mech but slightly techi chic I'll first have to find out where the thing is but I'll give it a go

I love being a winner :D and thanks for the welcome. Have tryed reseting the ECU but the flipping light just came back on again. What does the air flow meter acutally do, cos it seems to have no ill effect on performance?

The airflow meter allows the fuelling and air mixture to be refined for economy versus performance.

In your engine bay there should be a resonable large plastic box with snap catches on the sides. Connected to the box is a large diameter pipe that connects the box to the side/top of the engine. Within this pipe should be a cable with a plastic top that attaches to the pipe - I think on yours with two screws. This plastic cap holds the mount for the airflow meter/sensor/MAF.

If you unscrew the cap there should be enough slack in the cable for you to pull the sensor out and clean it. Ive used a tin of compressed air for this task in the past. Then re-assemble and reset the ecu.
