Grinding Noise

Hi,

When I take a sharp right-hand bend (or turn right on a roundabout) I get a hideous grinding noise from the nearside front wheel area (it makes spiral ramps in multi storey car parks a nightmare).

Any possible causes before I take it to Mr T? :help:

Cheers,

Iain

weird..

I went round a roundabout (small one too) really really hard the other week and got a grinding noise from the nearside front wheel too!!!!!

its a metallic kind of one, only happens if I turn really damn hard well into the realms of understeer!

If I was understeering its fine, if I turn the wheel more (just to annoy the car, really :P no real cornering benefit) the noise comes, if I turn a bit less it goes.. turn harder it comes back.

tbh, I thought it was the alloy somehow reaching the ground but there wasnt a ring of kerbage and scratches when I looked at the Rim (the roundabout is just outside my house)

I have Toyo T1-R's, standard yaris size 185's - what do you have?

Hi, when i first bought my t sport, i had a similar problem. My car had been sat for a while on the the forecourt and delevoped a litte bit of rust on the edge of the brake disks which grinded against the brake disk heat shield when turning tight corners. To solve it i just pushed the disk heatshield slightly away from the disk with my fingers. Its been okay ever since. I suppose if you wanted to do it more in depth you could remove the disks and clean up the rusty edges with some sand paper etc. Hope this helps, Lew

As above - but remember that on the back discs there are two dirt shield - the outer one you can see and one inside the back disc itself. Its the back inner one that rubs on mine - I ended up angle grinding it down a bit (or rather earpl did!)

i got the same problem aswell . do a full lock on the wheel and a mechanical clunking sound comes in from the front right wheel.... asked a few mechanics and they say its the outter CV joint thats knackered... would cost about 40-50 for the part. anyone think of any other possible reasons? its mainly due to turning too hard and harsh.

Ah, I reckon thats it for me then - theres definately a bit of a lip / rust at the edge of my discs as I dont generally hammer them that hard.

If I keep going round that roundabout real hard the problem will probably solve itself eventually  Will no doubt need a new tyre though

have to go to france to do the offside one eh!

Cheers for the help guys. I'll see whether I can do any corrrective action. The car does stand more than it used to as I now get the train to work.

For more info. I corner hard and brake little (pads are barely worn after 52000 miles!).

Snellgrove, I've got the same tyres. Perhaps the extra grip they give caues the problem :D

  • 4 weeks later...

i had a similar problem with my right front wheel making grinding noises when i turn right.

The problem was fixed after i fitted new brake discs and pads. The noise totally gone.

I’ve had the same problem, but I didn’t do anything about it. Now I think my break pads have completely gone! (had a full MOT on it 2 weeks prior so i assumed they would be fine) In usual driving conditions it makes a metallic grinding sound that increases when I brake. I think I need to replace the discs and pads before I do anymore driving >.<
