Steve Irwin has been killed in a diving accident after being hit by a Sting Ray. A living legend that has brought us all many hours of entertainment with his unique way of interacting and understadning wildlife. Leaving behind a wife and much loved kids he will be missed by many!!

Good night Steve.

Steve Irwin - Legend.

One of the most enthusiastic naturalists and all round nice guy. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. My thoughts to his family at this sad time.

Gutted, I always half-expected him to be killed years ago the way he used to pounce on dangerous wildlife but I'm quite shocked as recently I've only really seen him in zoos in controlled environments. Whatever he did, the enthusiasm he had for the best interests of the reptiles etc he was working with always shone through, he cared for them with a passion & was never shy in showing it.

Got to feel for his family & friends at this time

RIP.

A true entertainer to the masses, and a fountain of knowledge on the world's animals.

Condolences to his family and friends at this tragic time.

RIP Steve, respect for his life's work :(

My thoughts go out to his family.. but lets not forget one HUGE mistake he made.. a newborn kid in beside the alligators/crocodiles.. HE had and made his choices, that poor kid of his had NO choice.. i lost all my respect for him the day he done that stunt.

Maybe if he was a random nutter who knew as much as me about crocs (nothing!) you would have a point - he had only spent his whole life understanding how they tick / act....

Guy was a legend in my opinion

As a parent i would NEVER put any kid of mine in that position.. I know he knew his stuff on crocs etc.. but did he know his stuff on any nutter in the crowd who could have ran in beside him?.. or what if he happened to slip or something else that was beyond his control?? He was feeding the crocs at the time too.. if he had dropped that kid it was finnished, imo it was a VERY STUPID STUNT TO PULL.

I don't think i'm talking :censor: in any way, and i'm not here to get peoples respect, there are lots of people/parents who feel the same way as i do, and like i said. i feel sorry for his family at this time, it IS a sad loss for them and a sad loss for a lot of other people too.. but HE lost my respect the day he risked his own kids life.

Here's the thing the Guys dead and I was trying to point out that your comments where tasteless. If you have a view on something that you disagreed with him doing that’s great but hey "maybe" after 4 hours after someone has died it's not the best time to say so....

But hey you’re a parent maybe your view on it is different... I just think it's disrespectful

Point taken.. but i am only trying to point out that he isn't the legend he is being made out to be... i'm not trying to be disrepectfull.. but some people reading this may not know what he had done in the past, and it's something perhaps they should know before posting that he is a legend.

Knowing and seeing what he does to crocs and other animals it wouldn’t surprise me if the Sting Ray was being provoked by Steve.

He isn’t the sort of bloke who watches the animals from a distance, he has to pick them up and push their buttons.

As Ray deaths are as rare as hen’s teeth he may have thought he could get away with taking things a little too far.

I’m sure the details will come out soon enough and as he was filming a documentary it won’t be long before it’s on the net somewhere.

Shortly after 11am (AEST), Irwin was being filmed by a cameraman in 2m of water at Batt Reef, about 32 nautical miles offshore from Port Douglas, as he swam over the top of a large bull ray.

Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, the 2.5m stingray turned on Irwin and struck him with its tail, releasing a poisonous and jagged barb that pierced his heart.

Graphic footage of the incident, which police have seized, shows the animal turning and striking Irwin, who immediately collapses in the water.

"They were actually filming him at the time, the guy was swimming in the water, the ray stopped and turned and that was it," said Mr West, who viewed the footage yesterday afternoon.

"There was nothing to it. It was just a freak accident."

Everyones entitled to their own opinion - from what I saw, yes he was zealous with dangerous animals - but he grew up around them, and knew how to handle them...

What impresses me about him is his efforts for conservation, not to mention education about dangerous animals - teaching people to respect them rather than fear them..
