Hi guys'n'gals.....newbie Harry here,

Just bought a lovely Yaris diesel (September 2002 vintage)...lovely, lovely car......but I have this overheating problem, the coolant header tank remains full, but the radiator loses water. The oil is fine with no apparent water/scum.....and the performance seems fine!.....I'm just trying to convince myself that the head gasket does not need replacing! (having read some posts already on the early Yaris diesels)

Am I right in thinking this was an early poor head gasket design? If so were the cars recalled at some stage?

If I do have to bite the bullet, what sort of cost is involved? and can anyone recommend a good dealer in the South Beds/Herts area (Dunstable)

Lastly, any views on these 'Barrs Leaks' type of additive to stop leaks (I notice Barrs do an American product specifically for sealing blowing heads.....only seems to be in the US though) Thanks in advance for any replies!

Well the water is going somewere and if it's not leaking on the ground (visual check needed) or heater matrix (might be inside) then were is it going?

If the head gasket is blown then the radiator might be pressurised and with the cap off you may see bubbles of air and when the engine is reved up this will increase...

i would not run the car in this condition............

the water goes out of the exhaust in sum cases

Worth noting that an be a sod to check the ground as there's an undertray/cowl thing so the water may just be sitting on it until you move off...

Good luck with your diagnisis and I'm sorry I can't bemore help. Let us know how you get on though

Yes, the cylinder head gasket was leaking......though you would not have thought it to drive, the dealer has agreed to give me a complete refund.

So where can I find a nice diesel Yaris now?

This whole car buying thing seems to be a complete nightmare fraught with dodgy characters and rip off merchants......just waiting for the next green punter!

At least I've confirmed that the Yaris diesel is the model I want, seems to have the best of both worlds, performance with economy and £50 roadtax toboot......

Any suggestions of good recommended local dealers would be most welcome (South Beds/Herts)

Well glad you sorted the problem out but some of these d4d's do have a head gasket problem even some 05

have the same trouble....

if you take a look at this link and click on the pdf you may be able to avoid some chasis number's

with the same problem.............................

looks like the head and head gasket have been modified...............

As my fiance has a d4d that i think is fantastic i am not impressed with premature gasket failure,I replaced the head gasket on my L reg audi tdi last year when it had done 152,000 mile's and the old gasket dad 1993 stamped on it which i think is ok................

it's about time Toyota did some recall's but i suppose this would cost to much.............

  • 1 year later...

If anybody has the link with the chassis numbers can they also send it to me please

mcshort@alcatel-lucent.com

The Toyota dealer tells me they can't identify if it is the old or new head until they strip the engine, yet when I pushed customer relations they told me via my registration number that it was affected.

I don't believe a company the size of Toyota doesn't have traceability, it would violate their quality standards.
