[Extracted from Auto Express 01 Nov 2006]

Toyota is to produce an all new performance flagship Supra.

The car will be based on, and take its styling inspiration from the forthcoming Lexus LF-A

The new Supra will have a tuned 341 BHP 3.5 litre V6 motor with rear wheel drive and a 7 speed sequential auto gearbox.

0 - 60 speed is expected to be less than 5 seconds and top speed in excess of 170 m.p.h.

Fuel consumption is expected to be at least 30m.p.g.

Toyota have been testing this machine on the Nurburgring.

The concept version will be on display at the Detroit Motor show January 2007.

The production version is expected on sale in U.K. in 2008 priced to match the new Nissan GT-R

Who says that Toyota no longer produce performance cars??:thumbsup:

Nooooooooooooooooo of all things, not a V6 please!!!

Is this confirmed? There have been rumours for ages, where did you hear this???

7 speed gearbox is a worrying indication of a very narrow powerband too..... all previous supras managed very well with just 4 gears in auto form!

Still interesting none the less!

ghey ghey ghey

If they actually bring back the supra name to another car then i loose all of what little respect i had left for toyota.

A V6!? Ghey ghey ghey

Automatic!? 7 Speed!? Ghey ghey ghey

Toyota, if you are listening - Dont call it a Supra as its NOT a supra unless its a straight 6. Also give it a V8 and stop being wussy ;)

350bhp from a tiddly little v6 is not going to be enough for todays market, the new GTR will wee all over it.

What would you call it then though? :)

Edit to add.. just noticed the original post is now quoting the source as Auto Express. So its all total b :censor: ks anyway then :)

That's an old render, been kicking around for months... Came from some Jap mag originally (probably their equivalent of Auto Express). That particular 'new Supra' was going to have a 5.0l V8 from what I remember.

Toyota have been extracting themselves from the performance market for years, a new Supra wouldn't make any kind of sense to the brand. Unless it was powered by their fundamentally flawed hybrid system I suppose ;)

Yeah Auto Express always jump the gun and 'hope' they guessed right - which they never do. I would say that whatever Toyota do eventually release will without a doubt be a Lexus and not a Toyota - nobody wants to pay upwards of £40k for a Toyota Badge. Also 'if' it turns out to be a 3.5 V6 then it will be the 3.5 V6 from the IS350 - even more reason that it will be a Lexus. They can call it the Lexus Banana for all i care  ;)

You appear not to have read the Auto Express feature.

They actually mention that the forthcoming Lexus LF-A will use a 500bhp 4.8 litre V10 when it arrives in 2009 whilst the new Toyota Supra will get a tweaked version of the Lexus GS450h's 341 bhp 3.5 litre V6 hybrid powertrain giving it a unique combination of performance and economy.

The pictures posted on here by JappyBeast look nothing like those published in this weeks Auto Express.

Or just do what I do - Pop down the shop, read the feature, and put the mag back on the shelf! :D

Seems that the new Supra will go into the 350Z market segment. It is whatever Lexus makes out of the LF-A that will compete against the GT-R.

Google for "new supra".

Paul.

We have this strange thing called the internet now, the article is on their website ;)

Its typical Auto Express claptrap, what exactly is supposed to be so convincing about it? Like every other Auto Express 'scoop', its just speculation dressed up as fact and a bit of artwork that could have come from anywhere.

Where did auto express say it was going to be called 'supra', im sorry but i cant see that anywhere.

Just my 2p but I still think its ghey and Toyota need a damn good slapping. 7 speed auto!? WTF!

They can stick it!

It should be 'manual' and a V8! Not a poxy v6 with a blender attached to it.

Im sick of all this hybrid rubbish [sarcastic mode] oh yes but its good for the environment [/sarcastic mode] ... oh i see....and when those huge batteries die and need to be disposed of....how good is that for the environment?

Also 'its a sports car'....what do i care about the evironment?

Why not use the 1UR-FSE? 380bhp from a 4.6 V8 and if its anything like the UZ V8's that they are based on then 30mpg isnt a problem.

Im sorry but Vauxhall and Ford are the only two companies that get my respect now. The Monaro 500 and the Shelby Mustang GT500 i would still buy over this even if it turned out to be half the price.

Im sorry but i've lost all respect for Toyota...... and i think Autoexpress are making it up like Flatpack says ;)

No, just doesn't sound right.....

The V6 is better because the block is shorter (and lower) and therefore the centre of mass can be moved further towards the rear of the car.

The hybrid idea---if it is done right---is good because the electric motor on the rear axle can produce maximum torque from zero rpm upwards. It should be possible to get a very quick start and 0-60 time with optimal wheelspin.

Also, placing the batteries near the rear axle will add a bit more traction and help the weight distribution further.

Plus you get more power for less emissions. I think the only question mark is can Toyota make the car light enough to be sporty with the dual powertrain.

I guess it will be a bit smaller than the mk4.

Paul.

Well it wont be a new supra so i doubt it will be anywhere near the size of the supras.

Fair enough Paul, i get what your saying. I still think Toyota have lost the plot. I just hope whatever they release gets followed up by a proper 'meat and potatoes' version with a bigger engine as the idea of a v6 doesnt float my boat by a long shot
