Range Problem!

I recently have noticed the range on my yaris has been not acting accuately. When i fill up the same amount of petrol it can sometimes show 250 miles when i pull off the petrol station and then next time i fill up it will be 330 miles. This never used to happen, i basically took off my airfilter a little while a go and didn't put it back on properly and drove around for about 5 mins and realised a dodgy sound coming from under, i realised what had happend and put it back on properly. While it was not on properly i noticed the range stayed at 330 miles and didn't count down, this is what i reckon messed it up and made it loose its accuacy?

What i was wondering is there a way to fix this like maybe reset something or.....

You could try resetting the ECU (pull the fuse for 10 or so minutes), but the range thing is really bit crap. Best to use it as the most general of guides rather than anything serious.

The range tends to go up and down regardless really!

As Al says, its there are a guideline, not a rule. I usually get 330 miles to a tank but sometimes I can get up to 400 or as little as 290, depending on my driving - if I do a lot of motorway driving, it goes up, lots of little journeys make it go down.

I do rely on it too though and it is a useful tool to have, as I find the digital fuel guage is about as reliable as a TVR on its own, I guess the trick is to not take the range too seriously! ;)

Good point, i dont tend to whatch it alot but it just the way it seems so erractic and it shows so many different reading after i fill up, its not just like 300 everytime i fill up its more like pot luck with what number you get. Which it never used to do.

I used to use the range a fair bit, but instead of using that what I do now is reset the "Trip A" odometer and when that gets to around 330 miles or more I know it's near that time when I'll be £30 or so out of pocket  it does fluctate slightly for me, but the prob I get is that sometimes it doesnt reset when it's been filled up automatically, it's resolved by taking the key out the ignition, giving it a few seconds and then restarting.

I recently have noticed the range on my yaris has been not acting accuately.

From my handbook: (2006 model)

"4 Driving Range

The distance the vehicle can travel with the remaining fuel is calculated and displayed based on the quantity of remaining fuel and past fuel consumption.

The driving range display indicates approximated distance you can drive ......"

So short trips / heavy loads / soft tyres / many red trafficlights etc between fills will reduce the average mpg figure used for the calculation.

The book goes on to mention driving habits/road conditions all contributing to the actual range.

Personally I keep a 'weather eye' on the Instantaneous Fuel Consumption and try to keep it as high as possible whilst still making good progress and fill up when the last segment of the fuel indicator flashes. (I take the time at the pump to check average consuption and it is usually between 40 & 60 mpg).

It is a handy thing to have.

I fill "her" up when the range is at 80 then £20 and around 330 miles to go on.

Yeah it is annoying when it doesn't re-set automatically until taking the key out and back in.

I don't see how it's approximate though, mine still ticks down as normal if i'm going 30mph or even 70mph.

Also i've gotten out of the car it saying 250 and got back in to go and it says 270 or higher.

Useful anyway as a guestemate.

After filling up when its on ‘Range’ press and hold it for 2 seconds and it will re-set. Do this on Trip A or B as well and then you can compare the two for actually miles and estimated miles.

One will count Up and the other will count Down.

This will give you a good indication of the accuracy.

Bear in mind the computer calculates driving style vehicle/road conditions etc. I find it very useful.

Yeah, often do the reset thingy too..thats a good point about one counting up and the other counting down, will keep a closer eye on the both of them now as I filled up today..

 Isn't it just?

It's only intended as a basic guide. Oh and the reset advice given above will help. Reset the average speed and mpg too then your "range" will be singing from the same hymnsheet.

Buy a diesel. You don't get a range function because it can't calculate over 500 miles.
