Yaris Warning Light.

Hello all and a Happy New Year, my wife has a Yaris S and has a habit of stalling it (like most other cars she's had), problem is when she re-starts the engine the "P/S" warning light comes on and the steering becomes very very heavy and un-manageable, there is no description in the drivers manual for the P/S warning light but the obvious assumption (Power Steering) doesn't add up because there isn't any, no reservoir, pump, drive belt or hydraulic steering rack. Anyone got any ideas ??

Regards, Donski.

Just an update as I didn't receive any replies (which was a bit of a suprise), I've spoken to the local Toyota dealer and it turns out that the power steering system is an electric motor mounted under the dash , hence no pump etc. The advice from them was to turn the key back to the off position for a few seconds rather than trying to restart the engine from "ignition on" position, probably to allow the EM computer to reset, also the reason why it's not mentioned in the driver's manual is that the first MK 1's didn't have power steering.

Not heard of that one before but glad you seem to have it sorted. Actually, some phase 1s most certainly do have power steering. As yours doesn't it still makes me wonder why the steering should become heavy after stalling.

Of course, your wife still needs to learn to stop surprising her poor Yaris by stalling it. ;)

Oh and Happy New Year to you too!

The car does have power steering, first time I've heard of an electric version though but obviously had an old type drivers manual in it (hence no mention of it), as for stopping the wife stalling the car.............(The concept of increased revs when pulling away on an incline is completely foreign to her).
