Rip Off Insurance Renewal

Just got me insurance renwal through for my Avensis, @ £650. This is from Adrian Flux.

Did a bit of online shopping to see if I could beat it, Budget quoted me £495 which I was quite happy with.

Out of interest I rang Adrian Flux to see if they could match it. After being on hold for about a minute, the guy came back to me with a quote of £475.

So why the hell couldn't they just offer me that quote in the first place.

Robbing gits!

They make it up as they go along, some people who cant be bothered to shop about pay way more than they should, my renewel came thru at £800 for the year, went on money supermarket and 'More Than' came back with a £380 quote.. half price!

that's the nature of insurance though.

I agree that it's so annoying that somewhere will quote you a price, then quote you a much lower one to get your custom.

Ringing round pays off everytime.

I've been with my insurance company for some time now and when renewal time came up I called them.

They'd sent me through my renewal, so I quoted it.

I simply said to them "look, I should be looking around for better quotes. What are you going to do to stop me looking elsewhere"... the operator just asked me to wait a minute and came back on the line and said "we'll give you 20% off your quote".

Worked out roughly £100 saving for just asking. Give it a try. Nothing to lose. They have.

I had a rediculous renewal quote from Elephant with businness class usage. Admiral (sister company of Elephant) quoted me half price for Social and commuting. I gave Elephant the chance to match it and they actually had the cheek to increase my quote when downgrading to Social and Commuting!

That's exactly what I do with them . If you ring round you can ALWAYS get a cheaper quote, but it's time consuming and often frustrating. 'Give me a fair quote or I'll ring round' works wonders.

Oh, NEVER get insured over the internet. You can't do a deal or negotiate with a computer screen. It's always a case of ' this is how much it'll cost - take it or leave it'. In an industry famed for not having fixed prices it's a bit of a leap to accept a fixed price !

  • 5 months later...

Few days ago I bought 3 year old Corolla T-Spirit 2.0 Diesel (116ps). It came with free 7-day insurance. A promo by Norwich Union. It proved useful but NU Direct quote for one year was too high. A Quote, the broker I was using before, quoted me something over £240. Then I found advice at

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/

One of the 'screenscrapers' there, gocompare.com quoted me £112 plus free MOT with Kwik-fit.

I phoned Kwick-fit, as I was required to, and they quoted me £126.43p claiming that some of my details I gave to gocompare did not "fill through". A likely story to hike up the premium. Cos when I filled in exactly the same details at Kwik-fit website, I was again quoted lower. I was angered by this disreputable practice. However, the free MOT worth £45 was still on offer, so I decided to take it. At least for this year.

I filled in at the A Plan link from this site. They phoned me and quoted a premium that was cheaper than Kwik-fit. But no free MOT, of course. However, I will give A Plan a chance gain next year.

Read the article in the link given above and give the 'screenscrapers' a try. First time I did this and very pleased with the results.

Highly recommended :-)

You guys are lucky.

Every time i try to get a quote it goes like this...

"Have you modified or altered your car in any way?"

Yes..

"Could you tell me the first modification please?"

4 litre V8

"..........err.....nah we cant insure you on that...."

Ah, I see the problem here - You started off too Big !

First Mod should always be something small like stainless hoses, engine dressup etc.

Then, when they're all happy with you, you can hit them with the V8 news !

One way to lower insurance premium is to take advanced driving test by the Institute of Advanced Motorists or The RoSPA ADA. Training is given the 'Observers' who are volunteers. So not expensive at all.

Apart from the lower premium the main advantage is the the driving become smoother and more enjoyable.

I have also passed the motorcycle tests. Correctly negotiating a series of bends on a country road is very satisfying.

There is also a social side and other benefits.

Come renewal time elephant also send me a letter for a stupid amount - so I proceed to call em and say Tesco will do it for so many hundreds cheaper (this isnt actually true). The welsh elephant person then goes back and talks to his supervisor for 30 seconds and matches the deal. Done this for 3 years running now!

went to confused.com & they found one for £270TPFT with the claim listed
