Oil Change

Now after 8 months I want to change the engine oil, I am (rightly or wrongly) going to get the oil and filter from Inchcape ,but, my question is ....in the Haynes it tells you to put it on axle stands and take some covers off from underneath and inside the wheel arch, is that nessesary ? also can I use an ordinary filter wrench instead of a "claw wrench" as read in the haynes, and... what size socket is needed for the sump plug?

I've had a look underneath and the filter looks easy to get to and the sump plug (14 mm socket fits) is facing away toward the rear but I reckon I can get under and undo it without Jacking the car, got Toyota filter and 14w 40 oil plus the little carpet thingy that holds drivers mat in place all for £30
