Will It Get Me Fit?

I bought a bike yesterday!! lmao...

I've not been on one for about 10 years!!!

I'll be using it to cycle to work and back. About 3.6km a day.

My question is.. is it enough to make me fit? One way of the journey is all uphill! OUCH, my legs hurt tonight. lol.

Every little helps. Just don't give up when it starts raining. Also don't make my mistake and eat more to make up the extra calories you are using (I used to get really hungry when I cycled to work every day).

What bike did you get BTW?

Every little helps...... does that mean it's not very far then?? lol.

That's the bike. Nothing fancy, but tbh I couldn't justify spending silly money just for cycling to work and back and the odd cycle run.

It's a Diamond Back bike. Seems decent enough for what I want.

I've not been on a bike for about 10years! It felt sooooo weird!

After 2 mins my legs ached... I'm so unfit! lol

I imagine I would be the same if I got on a bike now, people would think I had a BOV as I went past with all the wheezing

Should've kept your Wii Jim!!! :P

If you put road tyres on your bike it will be easier. Put them on mine and it's great and much less thigh burn!

maybe road tyres don't look as 'funky' but they make a heck of a difference.

Well worth swapping them over. You can always put the off-road ones back on should you venture into some serious off roading.

You can get in-between tyres that aren't as thin as racer tyres. They do make a difference but watch out for the stones!!!

I used to run 4 miles every odd day... you will find the older you get the harder it is to lose weight!

Oh and keep away from that oil patch your RX7 made, you dont want to come off!

IM into biking 40 miles at a time - i see it as keeping heathly for sure without banging your knees like running does.

stick to road tyres for roads . if you need to change em WILKINSONS do a decent inbetween tyre for 5 quid . if you do get into cycling big style - look up the cycle routes in your area - most are old railway line tracks , like the tracks i ride. A fun way to keep fit , get fresh air and spend quality time outdoors.Lager never tasted so good after a good bike ride

If you're going to use the bike for more than just commuting I'd highly recommend that you buy some proper cycle shorts ( the ones with the padding ). Much soreness and chaffing can be avoided this way !

Loving the cycling so far!! Dunno if it's my imagination, but I feel hungrier!! I'm still totally poopered when I get home and sweaty... but hey. Tis fun.

Already started the modding! lol. I got rid of the crappy grip shifter things and changed them to some decent shimano click shift things (or whatever they're called).

TBH, my but is getting a bit sore! lol.

Was speaking to one of my staff who's a serious biker. He shaves his legs, wears lycra and has padded shorts! He also said he has a big tub of nappy cream to stop the chaffing etc!!

I am gonna get some shorts for cycling to work and back in the hot summer days!!

My rex is gonna clock up hardly any miles per week once it's back on the road!! lol

Riding bikes is something I'd quite like to get into, not for the weight loss aspect but for the fitness side but I'm worried about the pain at the, erm, top of the legs. I remember when I hadn't rode my bike for ages when I was younger, the following day I'd be walking like John Wayne, maybe that's because I only ever had BMX's though with the hard plastic seats.

As for the fitness side, it will be doing good because it gets your heart going so that will help it & cardio work helps your metabalism which basically means that you burn off energy quicker than if you didn't do it, meaning that if a fitness freak & a slob both eat a mars bar, even if they both sit there doing nothing the slob's body will store the energy for longer & turn more of it into fat than the fitness freak's would have

I am tempted, but I am over 10 miles from work, over bumpy often flooded country lanes, (with lots of hills!) If it is mildy damp I'll be splattered from head to toe in mud (especially if I take the cross country short cut!)

That and the fact that I am terminally unfit and will probably die before I get to work, or arrive as a sweaty wheezing wreck.

to hell with bikes, i tried riding to work once, it rained, some b**** drove through a puddle and soaked me, i fell off and landed in mud, got a flat tyre and had to walk 2 mile, then when i got to work wouldnt you know it the sun came out! i'll stick to the pies thanks, i might not be fit but im dry and happy!

That's me... lol. A red faced sweaty man! How long until my thighs get used to this sh*t and stop aching??

realistically you should be well in the swing of it after four or five days.

Your recovery time will decrease and you'll start to feel much happier.

Chin up dude !

I used to get a numb willie as well! That's far more worrying than a sore bum, especially when you get pins and needles once the blood starts to flow again
