Hole In Road Damaged My Rim!

HI all, looking for some advice really.

Picked up my celica 2 weeks ago, was well pleased up until I hit a huge hole in the road yesterday morning. :censor:

Looks like someone was digging up a manhole and had left it ovenight half done but not left any bollards or cones out. The hole was approx 3 inches deep or so which shook the car. Pulled over straight away, but surprizingly I didnt notice any damage to the car/wheel/tyre etc but I took photos of the hole just in case. I suspect it was some builders that were renovating the house opposite that may have been doing something to the road, rather than the council doing something but I dont know for sure.

Today I noticed that when accelerating the steering was shaking. So I just popped to kwik-fit, they took the wheel off and the wheel is buckled on the inside rim! I'm not happy!!! Tyre doesn't look too happy either. They have re-ballanced the wheel and said that it should be ok for now but I don't want to be driving down the motorway on a bent rim!!!

Anyway, if it was the councils fault then I will be chasing them for a new wheel and tyre! But if it turns out that the hole was due to some builders ripping the road up where would I stand? Would I then have to claim against the builders?

Has anyone had any experience of this sort of thing? I already contacted the council yesterday to let them know what happenned, they said they were going to get the highways agency to check the road out.

There are always a risk that the rims and tyres will get damages when driving on a road with holes. I hope everything will ok with your rim & tyre.

I hit a pot hole in the Yaris, split the tyre no damage to the alloy thankfully.

Took photo's and lodged a claim against Leeds Council with a copy of the receipt for the tyre.

Got a chq and an apology!

Look on your councils website, there should be details of how to lodge a claim for damage caused by the roads.

my mate cracked 3 of his 19" anteras by driving over pot holes on 3 seperate occasions, and he wasnt even going 50mph! he called the council and reported the incident and within 1hr there were guys out patching up the pot hole and left again!! he never saw a penny of them and it actually cost him more money as he had to get the rims imported from italy as they are a discontinued model! he tried to get them fixed and the guy told him there is no point as they are a crap make and that antera has gone down hill ages ago!!

on the other hand, i was watching an old episode of 5th gear the other day and i think they said that if the roads are in a bad state and has been for over a year then you got a good chance of claiming some money back, but if the road has been serviced every year then theres little chance of getting a claim!

I avoid any signs of road tear/bumps/drains/manhole on the road at all cost by driving around them, never mind just the pot holes!!
