The Corolla Hatch Lives On

Hi

It seems that the Auris is to retain the Corolla name in Australia: Linky.

It's a pity we don't get a more powerful petrol engine than the 1.6. It's the lack of a decent petrol engine that put me off the Auris.

It's only in Europe where they changed the name. Still known as the Corolla everywhere else

I'm aware that the saloon and estate (where they're sold) continue with the Corolla name but I thought that the hatch was to be called Auris everywhere. Toyota PR made a post here suggesting this. The hatch is known as the Auris (& Blade) in Japan.

I have just bought a Corolla/Auris out here in Australia. I think they kept the Corolla name for two reasons. The first being that the Corolla was not only about to notch up it's one millionth sale in Australia but it was also about to overtake the Holden Commodore as Australia's best-selling car. I've also heard that the locals don't much care for change in their car names. Nissan made this mistake here with the Tiida. It had been the Nissan Pulsar for years, a much-loved car, and I think the average Aussie didn't know what to make of the new name/model. Of course, it didn't help that they look so bad. I think Toyota played it safe and could pick up the accolades at the same time.
