Gt4 Turbo Problem

Hello there. I am purchasing a GT4 in Southampton. It is at an auction and they will not let me test drive it. The turbo does not seem to be kicking in and I have to drive the car 2000 miles at a stretch to Malta. I am not a mechanic but a collegue of mine told me its not such a big deal to replace the turbo since its mounted on the top part of the engine. I can buy a turbo here in Malta but I am not sure if I can do it myself especially without any instructions. Has anyone out there done this job before? Is it a simple job or not ? If I find a mechanic there in UK how much do you reckon they will charge to change it if I give them a replacement turbo myself ? Do you know of anyone there ? I would really appreciate a simple step by step procedure and what tools I need. By the way, this car is going to be converted into a hillclimb car and will be the only Toyota competing with the Scoobys and the Evos. Would appreciate some tuning tips too,but first it has to get me to Malta. Thanks a lot guys !

the turbo on an ST-185 can be a PITA to get off, i would check it is actually faulty first.

when you say its not kicking in do you mean that the boost gauge doesn't move? if so id check around for loose/split pipes and clamps first.

when turbos fail it is usually accompanied by a lot of smoke.

if you dont mind a bit of a journey ian at TR&D will have a look at it for you . he is in nottingham and is a GT4 specialist. his phone number is 0115 9680666
