Originally my car had the TNS200 with underseat cdrom satnav. Removed the headunit and found a colour unit on eBay, tried it for 5mins and found out the screen was actually majorly overhyped and rubbish. Plus it didnt work with the TNS200 cdrom based reader, it needed a dvdrom box or place the dvd map disk in the main front of the unit behind the screen. Couldnt be bothered to find the TNS300 disk so sold the colour sat nav next day for more, took out my tns200 cdrom reader sold it on eBay aswell.

Ended up with Kenwood DDX6029 6.9inch full touchscreen screen cd/mp3/dvd player, with the Kenwood KAC-520 harddrive garmin unit.

Only thing that remained in the car is the original GPS aerial in the windscreen behind the rear view mirror. Works great with the kenwood garmin unit very accurate within 1-2metres. Plus DVD videos look amazing.

Next up get my rear screens and veba freeview tvtuner fitted then all should be nice.

So to sum up i wouldnt even waste my time with the toyota units.

Cheers

Armz.

i dont really want to go down the aftermarket route with audio equipment - not my scene. you said the toyota screen was rubbish, was that the map screen or when you played dvd? im not to bothered about the map screen just prefer the look of the full screen and handy for dvd evan though cant imagine using too much. if i get a tns300 box will that work with original head unit until i can source a full screen?

it was the full screen sat nav toyota one made by JBL.

It didnt play dvd movies, so never got to try that and it i didnt have a dvd map disk, only cdrom one so all i got to see where the menus and audio side of things and the GUI was horrendous, really awful colours and looking very 1990's. I may have some pictures i took on my old phone, i will have to check.

I paid 345 for it on eBay through bidding, and sold it the next day for 450 buy it now. My tns200 cdrom player unit i sold for 80 on eBay without the garmin antenne. I still have my headunit and surround grill with airvents just incase i decide to put that stereo back in, i should probably sell it on aswell.

Just so you know when you pull your headunit out you will notice the surround area will not fit flush with a full satnav unit be it kenwood, toyota, alpine or any other double din unit, you have to buy the fullscreen sat nav grill surround, the entire plastic unit so to fill all the gaps left over, because your original headunit is flush curve fitted into the entire area. Man-Bing on these forums has lots of pictures if you want to see what i mean.

That grill cost me 105+vat from a toyota dealer before i found these boards. Send Parts-King a pm for a price on one, should be much cheaper than what i paid.

Was a waste of time getting any of the toyota stereo/nav equipment for me. Maybe you may like it, but i guess you wont know until you try it yourself.

Oh, one thing i did notice was that the sound quality was way better than the standard unit, by way better i mean much more bass, and midbass, treble sounded crisp too. But even the radio and cd menu's were very bad indeed. On a scale of 1 to 10, i would rate the standard headunit at 5 for sound quality, the full screen jbl one 7 and my kenwood one at the moment 9. All played on the same Speakers, same car.

thanks for your help - will check out the pictures 2moz. looks like i might have to adjust me plans. you would think it would be top quality with the price toyota wanted. whats GUI? as long as it looks better than the original and i can play the occasional dvd i will be happy. congratulations on joining the leather club - enjoy!

The reason its so pricey is that it's OEM and they are usually designed specially for toyota. So they come with a premium and not so much technology.

And the Toyota one does not play DVD movie disks. Only dvd maps disks.

How much are you being quoted on it?

Thanks for the leather

cheers
