Major Engine Issues! Tech Help Really Needed!

I was doing 70 on the motorway and engine power died.

I could with only slight pressure on the throttle keep the engine going but any more than slight pressure and a sort of ticking clicking noise came from the engine.

The car's been taken to Toyota and they told me there was no coolant in the engine and no compression.

Diagnosed as a blown head gasket and a full engine replacement was the only answer.

THE QUOTE!!! £6705 new engine fitted!!

This was abviously NOT an option.

Luckily my dad runs a rally school and has someone that can look at the engine.

He's opened the engine to find No blown head gasket, No scored/scratched bores or pistons, No damage to the valves.

No water in the oil, Basically NO visible damage.

We were expecting to find the engine would be shot and i'd have to find a 2nd hand replacement.

But now, we're not sure where to go with it!!

Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated!!

you've had two (conflicting) opinions.

might be an idea to get a 3rd independent opinion. hopefully that would agree with one of the first 2.

did the second garage confirm before stripping all the engine that there was no compression at all if that is the case there must be some reason for total lose of compression .ie overheated to a degree that the rings have nipped ,broken or stuck in the piston ring grooves .cylinder head badly warped

I was told firstly by an autoelectrician that there was no compression, then Toyota have assured me they checked each cylinder and still no compression.

We never checked it as we just (stupidly) assumed that they must be right.

We've poured petrol in the cylinders and there is no leakage through the pistons. No scoring on the cylinder walls. Nothing!

hi,could possibly be a hairline crack in the cylinder head on each cylinder if there was no coolant at all in the engine and warped cylinder head.i would take the head to a engine biulders and have the head preassure tested, then you know the prob lies somewhere in the block if it only needs skimming.

Turns out the head is warped!!

Still seems strange that there's no physical signs of this but I've been told that 12 thou needs skimming to get it right again!!

Does anyone how much can be skimmed before it will cause issues with vavles hitting pistons etc??

hi,the engine biulders will now how much can be removed from the cylinder head face, and supply you with a thicker head gasket.

ask on toyotaownersclub.com some good mechanics on there they may be able to help

0.012" is a lot to take off the head face - if you look at the cylinder liners, they are "pocketed" at the top

of the liner to give valve clearance when on lift.

The valve lift on the Inlet valve goes from 7.6mm to 12mm( 10mm for the Exhaust Valve) when you hit the lift,so clearance is tight.

IIRC the maximum warp quoted by Mr T on the head face is 0.0020"

Skimming the head and fitting a thicker head gasket(If you can find one) will alter the compression ratio

and the squish will change.

It might be worth giving Fensport a ring to confirm how much the head can be skimmed.

They may also have a used head to get you out of trouble.

if i have to pay that large amount of money to repaired the 2zz-ge engine you might aswell go for 3s-gte convertion boosting to 300bhp it will last forever in the corolla and out run all the so called hot hatch's.

ps:if you are looking for a 3s-gte engine's and gearbox's i have two of each for sale :D :D :D
