could it be from the head gasket ??

By soot do you mean its smokey? Is there any power loss? I assume the engine is a diesel? if so its not likely to be the head. Fueling is possibly the culprit.

how would i go about fixing this ?

Change the fuel filter and use a diesel fuel system cleaner in the fuel. If this fails it may need the injectors changed. I assume there is no water loss or excessive engine oil consumption? There is another consideration that the turbo may be faulty/non functioning or have a weeping oil seal.
