Stereo Problems

Hi, newcomer here

great site , I have just bought a 1994 st202 import, great car, did not have a stereo so nipped into Halfords and bought a cheap ripspeed CMR i3000 as it plays mp3's and has an ipod link, bought the wiring adaptor also. stereo will light up and accept a CD and chuck it back out but will not perform any other function, naturally I just assumed it was a knackered unit so took it back and tried another one, same problem, really stuck, am I missing something??? is there any difference between the import & UK spec as far as the stereo is concerned, or a different electrical output?? have tried searching the site but can't seem to find anything, there does seem to be a third adaptor on the cars loom but I cannot find an amp or anythig under the cigarette lighter so I dont know what its for is has a blue adaptor end with about 5 wires in it......help.......

Daft question - have you tried another CD? I'd probably go for a brought CD, rather than a burnt CD, and see where you go from there.

I don't think its the CD as no other functions work on the head unit i.e radio or voume etc, I thoughout if there was an amp in the car this may create a problem but now i don't think so as this should have no bearing on the controls of the head unit

Hmmm, curious...

Do you have a multimeter? Might be worth seeing what kind of power you are getting down your switched live.

And is the earth ok? I know (although I've never come across one) that some stereos make use of the areal connection for an earth and might not power on if its not connected / bad.

Beyond that, could it be a rubbish batch of stereos...?

I'm confused...

I've just done my stereo in a 1991 5th gen, found the speaker wires under the passenger seat...apparently there used to be an amp under there...not sure if its the same on yours but maybe worthy of a look. I worked out all the cables in the end...was fun!

at last!!!!!!!!!, found the problem, the young lad in Halfords was not as switched on as he thought he was, when I first tried it I only used one of the live wires, and when I took it back to Halfords the guy crimped both acc live & perm live together, telling me that this was the norm, after taking it back to Halfords for the second time another young lad who WAS switched on took one look at it and said that it was due to the lives being crimped together with this specific stereo so he un crimped them and...............hey presto..............pumping tunes, only thing I have to do now is check and see if there are any Speakers in the back as there are wires on the loom which i have connected but not getting any sound out from the back
