I Might Have Dreamed This But...

I was thinking today, how good it would be if there was a garage / workshop place, with a couple of knowledgable mechanics who worked there running the place, but that all you paid for was the time your car spent in there, say £10 / hr or something, only and here's the thing... You work on your car yourself, but using equipment that is provided by the garage. The mechanics can offer assistance as and when it's required (as can your like minded enthusiasts working in the next bay along) and you provide the labour and parts.

Then I had a sort of weird childhood flashback... and I recall a garage near where my Mum and Dad live and I'm sure they used to do something like that, but it's odd... it feels like I dreamed it.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this before, I am I going mad?.... or am I onto a winning idea here :lol:

There used to be one in Cardiff - only lasted 6 or so months - went belly up and folded.

its a good idea in theory, but put it into practice and it just wouldnt work

were not allowed our own cars in the workshop at uni anymore, after a lad lifted his punto up, dropped the engine out of the bottom and then lost a bolt for the new turbo he was fitting, and it stood there in the middle of the workshop for 3 weeks till the new bolt arrived. taking up loads of space and getting in the way.

i guess it could work, but would be expensive and difficult to run.

id enjoy something like that, but id rather work on my car in my own space with my own tools, its just the cost and space really.

A garage could run a scheme like it one day a week perhaps, but have it as more of a "how to" lesson, rather than a DIY session.

That would be more feasible - but there are plenty of adult education courses/technical colleges that already provide this to some extent. A garage is also a business and has to make money to survive - Losing a day's revenue to teach someone things that are well detailed in Haynes Manuals etc might not seem like the best idea !

When I was visiting a friend at RAF milden Hall, they have a workshop there for the air force types to work on their cars...

How would insurance work?

As it usually does;

They'd take ridiculous amounts of money off you for premiums, then find a reason not to pay out as soon as you claimed. ;)

The workshop idea's a good one though; I'd love to see it work, but it seems that where it has been tried it has sadly failed.
