I have an estima emina 2.2 auto diesel. and when starting a knocking sound just under the drivers door (underneath) can be heard loudly but seems to fade slightly when moving.

I was initually told that it could be"A Spacer" between the engine and gearbox????

Can anyone shine any light on this annoying noise. :(

Thanks

what kind of frequency is the knocking? like 5 times a second or once every 5 seconds?

I was told that it MIGHT be a Spacer between the gearbox and the engine?????????

But i will have a look at the exhaust mounts (Thanks for that).

  • 2 weeks later...

The most likely cause is the SADS bushes which is common on the Estima imports and living proof that the low mileages that people are led to believe are genuine on these cars is a load of b******t. These cars use the same bushes as the UK Previa's and they almost never fail on Previa's that have done upwards of 200K miles and yet on the Estima's, which have supposedly only done 40 - 60K Kms when imported they go...hmmmmm.

Anyhow SADS stands for Secondary Auxillary Drive Shaft and it is a shaft that runs from the front of your engine to the front of your car and turns the FAN, Alternator and A/C compressor. On either side of it are rubber mounted bushes whose roll is to absorb the vibrations of the turning shaft. When they go you will get the characteristic knock knock which will seem to come from under your centre console. To confirm if it is this at idle turn on the lights and air con and see if the sound get s worse if it does it is almost certainly is these.

Another source of a knock could be the cam belt idler but my money would be on the SADS. As long as you have a bit of mechanical knowledge they are not hard to change and can be found on eBay.

These guys are a good source of spares for the Estima imports
