Car's Mileage

Alright, my pop bought a Hummer stretch and it seems to give a handfull of problems. It reads only having 58k mileage but the condition of the motor and the problems arising hint that the milage is way more.. Probably around 150k..

Also it is illegal how the seller sold it like that, there's no way it could pass the smog test.. aside from all the other parts wrong with the car..

The mileage shown is completely digital. Is it possible to track somehow with a computer the true/real mileage of the engine? I am under the suspicion that the seller made the hummers display a different mileage although I beleive it is not the true mileage.

(just something I heard my dad say, can't do anything like sue the seller although he ripped my dad off and sold the car in an illegal condition although he said it was well-workn condition.. until my dad has some proof- I just figure I'd ask around and see if anyone knew about this)

Also I heard my dad say:(but we need some stronger proof..)

The Hummers engine is a surburban engine, it has 5,000 running hours with 58,000 miles on it..

My dad also has a suburban with about 5,000 running hours but with 150,000 miles on it..

If it's got a service history, the mileage would be documented at each service. So check that.

Odo reading can be very easily altered on digital displays with the right kit and know how...

If the seller sold you a car & deliberately lied about the mileage then yeah, it is illegal. You'd have to prove it had been "clocked" & the seller knew it had when he sold it though. As mentioned, the best thing to do would be to check it's service history

BTW, did you know you are in the UK section of this Toyota Owners forum? be tricky for anyone in the UK to be sure what is legal and what is illegal in California.

Out if interest, how do you know how many running hours an engine has? not heard of that measure before.

Did your dad actually check over the car before he bought it? Sounds like enough clues in there to walk away from this deal and if not, he must have had a description of the car from the seller that is not matching with what he got.
