What Is It?

Hi there, have just started a new job so needed to get another car for the missus to run the kids around in, ended up buying a '96 Starlet Sportif, after which driving back home from the garage, I decided to keep and let her have the Escort, as driving it just put a smile on my face.

However, there was no owner manual with it and I have got a hole in the console which I haven't got a clue what should be there and a switch to the right and below the steering wheel that again I haven't got the foggiest about....any help with identifying these would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Rob

Heated rear screen is the missing one perhaps - or is there one of those elsewhere?

[EDIT]Heated screen's above those controls isn't it. On models with A/C the A/C and ECON buttons are there. On models without it may just be a blanking plate; though if that were the case I'm surprised there's what looks like a connector behind it[/EDIT]

And the other - is it a switch or a pot; does it turn smoothly? If so could be instrument brightness adjustment.

Thanks... the switch just flicks up and down.

Any other suggestions for what these are, other Starlet owners, do you know what should be in the console space or what the switch is?

The hole in the centre is definitely where your aircon switch would go. Do you have the aircon gear in the engine bay?

The switch to the right could have been added by the previous owner - they didn't add any lighting or neons did they?

Bingo, Gareth / T600, take your pick from any prize on the top shelf.

The garage called me just this 'avo to say he found the owner manual and service history, so picked it up earlier and the hole is indeed where AirCon button should be (albeit in it's most primitive form), so in the morning, I will be checking to see if there is any gear under the bonnet, as T600 pointed out, there is actually a connector in the hole.

As for the switch... the manual gives me nothing! it doesn't look like anything added post production as where it is located is moulded to fit as part of the surround, I can't see anyone going to the trouble of re-moulding the whole fascia beneath the steering wheel (well certainly not in the original grey to match speaker housing), it's got to be something that comes standard fit / optional.

Although if I go outside tonight and try it, only to see the under-belly glow, I'll be laughing my nuts off :-D

Keep them suggestions coming for it.

Many thanks

Rob

That's what I thought it might be, but he says it's a switch.

Perhaps someone has removed that control and then used the space for a switch for something else.
