Hiace 2000 2.2 Diesel

Hi I got a Hiace 2.2 Diesel on a 2000 Y plate (UK) After a new cam belt was badly fitted and then snapped. It was repaired, the head was skimmed and new valves were fitted. Two days on the road and the engine vibrated and a big black cloud of smoke came out the exhaust and all power was lost. Mechanic had to set the timing and replace the cambelt again. Since then it smells of exhaust and oil. Its a bit smokey changing from 2nd to 3rd gear (grey smoke) and it is burning excessive oil. The exhaust when started from cold is sooty with specs of black on the driveway. It drives OK but Any clues why its so rough! Thanks in advance Nick
