What Would Be The Damage If Cambelt Snapped?

Having recently spent a lot of time under the wheel arch etc of my car I have replaced the cambelt etc. I'm curious to know what would happen to a 1998 1.8 Petrol engine if the cam belt were to snap. I've had it happen before at tickover on a cavalier and it didn't blow then engine but hear other stories of engines becoming scrap. Why does one wreck and another not ?
