Help Needed! Avensis Verso Idle Between Goes Between 800-1500

Hi all. I´m new here and have just bought a second hand -02 Avensis Verso with the 2.0 vvt-i engine. I have had it for a month and tonight I noticed a strange thing with it!

When clutch is engaged AND when the wheels are rolling, the idle goes up and down between 800-1500 rpm continously! As soon as the car stops moving, the idle goes back to normal. Also, as soon as I press the A/C-button, the idle stops moving up and down and settles at roughly 1000 rpm.

I´m very confused, is this a known issue? I have searched the internet but haven´t found any similar cases. Any idea what this is all about?

Please help!

I am a bit confused about this as when the clutch is engaged and the wheels are rolling I thought the engine is not idle but driving the car?

If the car is NOT in gear or the clutch is disengaged then the engine is idle. If you have the a/c on then every time the compressor kicks in it will place a load on the car and the computers will increase the idle speed to cope with this. Pretty much the same as you would increase the engine speed to cope with driving up hill.

In my Verso the idle speed varies between 800 and about 1,100 when the a/c is on. In my last car (not a Toyota) the idle speed was not effected by the a/c so it is really down to how each manufacturer wires up their a/c systems.

You will also probably notice that the idle speed is faster when the car is cold but goes down after things have warmed up. All perfectly normal. :)

Sorry for my bad explaination. What I meant was: When clutch is pressed down and car is rolling, gear in or in neutral doesn´t matter, idle goes up and down between 800-1500 rpm continously. When speed decreases to aprox 10 mph, the idle goes back to normal. When a/c is engaged the idle works as it should.

I disconected the Battery during last night and now it seems to work allright. Don´t know why, but I guess I managed to reset some electrical thing and just hopes it will continue to work. I think this problem came after I charged the Battery a few days ago with the Battery still connected, at least didn´t notice any problem before that. Anyway, if any of you had a similar problem and managed to solve it, please tell me what caused it and how it was solved.

There is a switch under the clutch pedal that will "blip" the throttle (like briefly pushing the accelerator) when you change gears. This is to keep the engine revs up and make gear changes smoother.

So every time you have the clutch pedal down you should see an increase in revs. Maybe this is what you have noticed?

Could be, but I don´t think so. Maybe that thing had hang or something. But the revs kept going up and down all the time with clutch disengaged, not just once. Anyway, I disconected the Battery during the night hoping that would reset any sensor that had hang, and that appears to have helped. The car works normally now, and I hope it will last! Thanks for your help, I hope the problem don´t return... in that case I´ll go for that switch under the pedal.
