new to the site so here goes, want to replace brake pads and discs on my daughters 2001 yaris 1000 cc, long time since carrying out any car repairs is there anything to be careful of or any helpful advice.

Hi, I think the proceedure is fairly typical, the only thing I have seen mentioned, is that some models have different sized discs, meaning they must be peplaced with ones the correct size, with matching pads.

I can't help you to discover your correct sizes but maybe a dealer could, given your chassis number. If you are certain of the correct parts, a motor factor would most likely be a lot cheaper than a main dealer, though.

Its very easy to do the pads and discs. You only need a 17mm and a 13mm/poss 14mm spanners. A pair of big water pump pliers would also be handy to push the caliper pistons back. Just take off the wheel, undo the two 13mm/14mm bolts the hold the caliper. Remove the old pads. If replacing the discs remove the two 17mm bolts that hold the caliper carrier. At this point the disc usually falls off in your hands. If not, then strike the disc where it sits on the hub with a hammer. This will allow the disc to be pulled off. Just reverse the proceedure to re-fit the new parts. DONT FORGET TO PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE DRIVING OFF to take up the gap between the new pads, disc, caliper piston.
