Question On Yaris Mmt Gearbox

Dear all, first timer here,

I read a few posts in this forum on MMT gear box, still not clear so could someone please clarify.

I test drove a Yaris 1.0 MMT at a toyota dealer, the car drives superbly and smoothly but found that gear box functioning a bit odd.

LEt me try to explain it better,:

Till the point you engage or press the gas pedal (accelerator) the car remains in neutral gear

It doesn't matter whether it is Drive gear or Reverse gear, car was only moving(OR will only do so!) till I step on the gas. Is this normal ?

The salesman at toyota 'promised' me that this is just the way MMTs are designed to operate and no safety feature is compromised by with this way of functioning. Grateful if some MMT owners could confirm this.

Cheers

HS

There is no "creep" whilst the engine is idling such as you will get with an auto which incorporates a torque converter so nothing happens until you step on the gas, the automatic clutch will then engage and you will move.

Understand there is no creep movement till you step on the gas, but the only cause of concern here is when the vehicle shows the tendency to manoeuvre in the opposite direction between the time you take your legs off the break pad and step on the gas. There may be a delay of 0.5 to 1 seconds. E.g when waiting while going up the hill.

Or in other words, in traditional automatic models, there may not be a real need to use the handbreaks in certain situations, but for MMT due to this 'special feature' it is must that you start your manoeuvre by releasing handbreaks for your own safety.

That is perfectly normal, as stated, it is not an automatic, it is a manual clutch with hydraulic intervention. You MUST get used to using the handbrake on hill starts, it is what we should all do anyway but we get lazy

Kingo
