Intermittent Start Problems

2004 2.0D4D, 73K miles FTSH, last service @ 70k Apr 08.

The problem with the car is the car will not intermittently start after it has been used.

I first experienced the problem on Sunday. Done lots of local driving without any issue. Got home, stopped, got back in the car after stopping for all about 15 minutes and the car would not start. The car would turn over but would not start. I tried about 5 or 6 times without any joy.

Anyway called out the RAC, started straight away.

Today, the wife was using the car. Again, drive to the village and parked up. Returned to the car and the car turned over but would not start.

Eventually started. I took the car for a long drive, drives is very smooth, no warning lights.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem or suggest what would be causing the non starting problem.

Thank You

your car has a faulty starter motor, replace it and the fault is cured, fault is caused by scratching on the armatuer shaft which causes a high resistance on the electrical circuitry, starter will be turning quite normal when you start warm, but the excess current draw shuts down the injectors hope this helps you

Thank you for your replies.

The car is booked in with Mr T. I took out the Toyota extended warranty so if the starter motor does require replacement there should be no cost me.

My car is 2004 D4D T Spirit 71k miles and bought 1 mth ago. I suffer from very similar problem now.

My car was turned off on the street last wendesday and I couldn't start the car. So, I went to garage. The guy inspected my car and changed one glow plug. No problem to start. At that time, engine oil, filter, break pads, etc.. were changed.

After coming back home without problem, I parked, turn off the car and then tried to start again to park differnet location but I couldn't start. So, all glow plugs have been replaced. Unfortunately, problem still happened. The Battery changed but not fixed at all.

The weird thing is I can't start the car only after moving. But, once I start luckily, there is no problem to start again. The garage guy said it might be fly wheel problem. A unbalance of the axis of the bearing can cause the problem according to his experience. Big problem is the cost (about 1000GBP). But I am suspicious and hesitating to change it. Can anyone give me opinion?

I have a question to Hem-laq02. Did you solve this problem after start motor changed?

Hi RyanK

if your car starts ok from cold, then run til normal operating temp. switch off and if when you attempt to start it the starter turns the engine normal, but fails to start the engine, you can safely say its the starter motor.. the only problem with the DMF has been clutch related. Have'nt a clue what an unbalance of the axis of the bearing is but i would assume it is something to do with the laughing shaft and giggle pin... The starter motor is approximatly £300 , but it should still be under a warranty from where you bought it, even independent garages have to give you a minimum of 3 months warranty, sale of goods and fit for purpose law. hope this helps you

I bought my car from cargiant in london but I didnt buy optional AA warranty. They said if the car is out of order the next day I bought, I should fix it myself. Is it wrong? I already changed the Battery and glow plugs. Even these one are under warranty? Also, what is DMF?

unfortunatly this is how these people sell cars, you sign away your rights, they are just glorified private sellers,. The DMF is the Dual Mass Flywheel

Currently, that problem has been disappeared since a few days ago but I still want to know the reason.

To Ryank,

Have been over to Uk & have had dealings with Cargiant. They make life hard for customers, most people just walk away, you have not signed your rights away. A number off phone calls, apoint solicitor whose specialaty is sales (sales of goods act) & small claims court. Problem solved, they are not above the law, good solicitor will pull smallgiant smallprint apart. May be to late for you now ?

  • 1 month later...

Had the Starter Motor replaced under Toyota extended warranty. I can notice the difference straight away, starts with ease, effortless and much quieter. Asked how much it would have been if I had to pay.

£375 + vat - Starter Motor and Labour. Told that I would not have much if any change from £500.

Added bonus, both headlights also replaced under warranty. I do not have a problems with the headlights or notice any problem with them.

hi, i have a similar problem that my yaris t2 1.0 intermittently wont start or when it does it sort of splutters and struggles, once its running its fine though no unusual noises etc. Does coincide that first time it happened was second time startin after filling up wth fuel (100% sure i put right fuel in). Will turn over but just doesn't kick in and when you let the key go thats when it sort of splutters into life, almost stalling. any ideas as to what this might be? thanks
