Buying 06 Yaris But High Mileage

Hello all,

I have the opportunity to purchase an 06 plate T3 1.4D Yaris for £4500. It has a full service history and is owned by a driving instructor. The low price is due to 80,000 miles on the clock. The £4500 is what he would get as a part exchange value.

Could anyone tell me, is 80,000 miles a problem for this engine, parts, reliabilty etc?

I'd love to buy it but am worried about this high mileage. Any thoughts would be really helpful. Thank you all, W.

D engines are built to last longer than petrol? Don't ask me why. It seems a good price but do offer £4000 over the phone.

The diesel engine will go on for ever :)

But your clutch wont! Being a learner car I guess the clutch has had some abuse, so best to have a test drive to see if the clutch is slipping or any other problems.

Also price seems a little high still, here is a Whatcar valuation with the 80,000 miles:

Dealer £4,600

Private £3,915

Part exchange £3,445

Trade £3,140

Cost new £11,280

Learner driver abuse is the key to this one, plus the fact it has probablly spent most of its time shifting through the gears, and three point turns. I would be inclined to give it a miss, although a test drive would not hurt

The engine will be fine if they were motorway miles, it’s the all the other bits that would have taken a bashing. Those are 80,000 miles on side streets, high revs, missed gears, kerbed, bumped, different drivers every day all day, stalling, heavy braking the list goes on.

Keep in mind that the majority of those 80,000 miles are LEARNER miles, all the other components are being used heavily and roughly.

If it was sat on the motorway all day then the clutch, gears steering suspension electrics aren’t used as they are by the above comments.

Walk away
