Gen 7 Overheating

Gen 7 190.

- Within 10 mins of being on the road, the temperature guage hits max and starts flashing.

- The heater in the car is not working - air is blowing through, but it is cold.

There is plenty of coolant in the expansion tank, and I can't find any leaks. I took it to a (non-Toyota) mechanic to take a look over - they told me that there was an airlock, they removed it, but that did not fix the problem. I asked if it could be the thermostat, and they said no - they said it was probably a problem with a valve, it would require removal of the dash, and for that I need to go to a Toyota dealer.

So is there any chance they have it wrong, or perhap something simpler that they could have missed? If not, and it is a valve, is this a job that can be done only by a Toyota dealer?

Is there a kind soul out there who can offer any suggestions?

does sound like the thermostat to me, the engines overheating because the thermostat isnt opening to allow cool water to keep the engine cool.

and ive not heard of any valve behind the dash board (could be wrong nor did i come across one when removing stereo)

i think that garage took you for a ride with an airblock thermostat was something like £25 from MR T (for a 140 imagine it would be similar to the 190)

i havent replaced mine yet as im struggling to get the time on the weekend to do it but seemingly the thermostat is where your alternator is.

i would give this a try before you throw it into a toyota and maybe try a diffrent garage if you cant do it at home

yep thats got the symptoms of a sticking thermo but i wouldnt of thot it would hit the max temp while on the move that quickly iv done radiators and waterpumps on the gen7 before have you checked them for leaks leading to no coolant maybe

just a thot bud

Thanks for the replies.

I thought I would come back to post an update.

I ended up taking it to Toyota, and it was....an airlock. As you can imagine, I'm pretty annoyed with the first place I took it to - I've not had any problems with them before, but after that, I doubt I will go there again. Unbelievable.
