Celica Vvti 140 Oil Consumption

Hi everybody,

I'm going to be purchasing a Toyota celica fairly soon i've got about £3.5k to spend.

However, i've been looking into getting a 140 (i do a fair few miles so need the extra mpg

and slightly lower insurance) and i've seen loads of bit on the oil consumption topic.

I'm shocked, i've always thought toyota's engine were kevlar coated and grenade proof.

My dad's lexus has done a massive 170k and it's fine, (touchwood) hardly ever any maintenance above

and beyond what's expected.

Anyway, (let me apologise first because i haven't got a clue,)

when i'm going to look at cars how do i know if it consumes oil?

Surely the person selling the car is just going to say no, it doesn't.

Does it affect all 140bhp celicas?

Is there anything else that i should be looking for?

Thanks in advance to everyone.

JP

I dont think new cars are meant to require much oil what so ever these days. Funnily enough my recent 1995 Celica had 229,000 miles on it and it was consuming about £10 of oil a month. The 2003 VVTi I'm purchasing has 150,000 miles on it and the only time it needs oil is during a service when they change it anyway.

You should really try and afford a face lift (52 reg. on), as you say, there is no way of knowing if a 140 pre face lift has the oil consumption problem. For the price bracket you're in, it will probably mean going without the Premium Pack of Leather/Climate/Sunroof, but it will be worth the searching.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Yeah that's what i was afraid of, i think i might leave it and save up a little more, or wait for prices to drop a little.

Im not in a rush but i want the perfect car. Low mileage good spec, as im probably gonna keep it till it dies, lol.

Um another really stupid question; whats the difference between the pre face lift (99-52) and the face lift (52-)

apart from the slight modifications to the 140 vvti engine.

Thanks Again JP

Sorry to be a pain, but how much do you rekon a

52 Reg plate car with average mileage and sport pack leathers etc

should go for.

I've looked on autotrader and it seems a bit sketchy, traders look cheaper than private?

I think they maybe over pricing?

Thanks JP
