Hi -new member here and I'm looking at purchasing a used Avensis (my first Toyota, and my first car purchase since moving to the UK). My question is: What visual queues can I use to identify a 2.2 D-4D vs the 2.0 D-4D? I'm looking at cars circa '05 reg.

Thanks in advance,

-Mike

Common faults!!!! My cars done 67,000 miles and i havent had any problems since i have bought it. Normally i think the 2.2 comes with a 6 speed gearbox. I THINK!!!

First MK2 (03 onwards) Avensis D4D 2ltr is belt drive. The later 2.2ltr D4D engine is chain drive & i think from 05-06 onwards the 2ltr D4D engine is also chain drive, but other forum users would have to confirm the year later 2ltr D4D went to chain drive.

The new diesels 2.0 & 2.2 engines (1AD-FTV & 2AD-FTV) look identical ;)

The difference is the con rod length/stroke etc, so you wont be able to tell just by viewing it.

**** Just seen how old this thread is - suspect a car has already been bought lol ******

Mart.

Well I have seen pictures of the engine bay and the 2.0 looks a bit like the 2.2 but you can tell the difference as the engine cover is different the Battery is bigger the intercooler is a lot bigger and other things on the 2.2. After gathering more info the 2AD-FHV in the T180 is nearly exactly identical to the 2AD-FTV I mean 2231cc, same bore and stroke same oil quantity etc. I think that extra like the piezo injectors and other things give it the 177BHP from the 150BHP. I got this information from owners manual and Avensis brochure.

In continuation of the topic, I have been wondering about the different version of the 2.2 diesel in the 2009 Avensis.

At first glance it appears that there are two versions: 2.2 150 and 2.2 180 D-CAT. Both have engine code 2AD, ie. 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV.

But in all press realeased where the 2.2 automatic is mentioned, they refer to the automatic as the 2.2 150 D-CAT.

Now, is the automatic 2.2 150 a detuned version of the 180 - complete with D-CAT and NDPR filter?

Or are all 2.2's with D-CAT now?

Hope for some enlightenment.

Both D-CAT models have the same basic engine, 2AD-FHV. The normal 150 has 2AD-FTV engine.

And yes, the enginen with automatic is D-CAT 150.
