New Phone Time....

It’s got to that time again where my provider has started calling me to see if I want to upgrade....

I don't like the phone I have, but can't think of anything better for me... so I thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas or suggestions! B)

I am with Vodafone, and in all honesty want to stay on that network, as it’s the only one that has acceptable reception where I live. I currently have a Nokia 8600 Luna (rubbish) which replaced my 8800 (aweome, it was the 8800, not the cheapy ugly sirocco) that I loved, it just is a bit old to use now and the Battery life is not too hot! :P

I don't care about 3g or cameras. I don't want an MP3 player (I have an iPod which is only used in the car anyway) I don’t want a mini games console (PSP) or satnav... I just want a good quality phone that is well built, compact, “feels” substantial, looks good and has strong signal to make clear balanced sounding calls.

My only criteria is bluetooth that allows me to make a quality echo free calls via my car’s built in hands free system, and allows me to access the phonebook/recent calls etc through the car.

Obviously any new phone will have bluetooth, but some sound horrid and echoy when used with car kits (no feedback filter or something) I also nee done that allows the device connected to read the phonebook and recently dialled numbers, so I can dial and receive calls with caller ID on the car kit.

I liked the 8800 as it had sturdy stainless construction and the sapphire crystal screen it felt like a “quality product”

Can anyone suggest anything for me to check out or try? I know a lot of the new LG phones don’t work with bluetooth phonebooks, as with some of the Nokia N series, but I don’t want a touch screen gadget laden shenanigans anyway...

-And I can’t afford a Vertu... :( which would be spot on

Does your bluetooth setup allow you to stream audio from the phone? That can actually be quite neat, I found - listening to MP3s in stereo that are stored on the phone, even though I know you said have an iPod (and you would be hard pushed to get a phone that does not have MP3 capability nowadays).

PS - you could also look at BT Mobile as they piggy back off the Vodaphone network, so if you got Vodaphone signal, you got BT Mobile signal.

Vodafone do the Blackberry Storm phone..Brilliant phone and does all that you want..... :D :D :D :D

As my Blackberry is on o2 Work tariff...we cant have one...

My personal phone is an XDA Orbit...as I have my tomtom sat nav on it, also good for surfing the internet whilst sat on boring trains in the morning....

My setup does not allow me to stream via bluetooth, but thats no loss, my previous setup in my hilux did (as does my other half's MR2) but I never used it, it seemed a little clunky, and the sound quality is not ideal.

The iPod setup which allows me to browse all my tracks via the factory sat nav scren anyway so that covers all my music needs! (similar interface that is used to browse the phonebook and dial from).

I'm not really fussed about any features, as long as I can call and send SMS in comfort, and it sounds good and looks good I'm happy, so in my eyes there is no point in going for backberry/N series/iPhone, just more software fo fail and crash!

Cheers for the heads up on BT mobile!

Is the C902 the really thin one? I must admit my other half had a Sony Ericsson before she got the hatefull LG viewty and it seemed really good! - It might also be worth adding I'd choose compactness over features too!

Could depend on the Cars bluetooth, but the Windows Mobile phones don't seem to be able to have SMS working on head units (could be a sweeping statement there ) so could be another whole set of options to discount :D

Also, I remember reading some posts here about phones that don't work properly with the Toyota bluetooth when they are Network Branded but the OEM brand unlocked versions are fine :g: BMW bluetooth could have some similar issues?

I would suggest that whichever you end up, make it clear to the Supplier that you reserve the right to return it for another if it doesn't connect like you need - or maybe goto a Vodaphone shop and try connecting ones you like?

The SMS through the headunit isn't a biggie, as long as I can use the phone books, the SMS feature doesn't work on my current nokia anway, infact I think it may be disabled as part of UK market legistation.. I'd never read/send texts when driving anyway! ;)

I *think* the ability for a handsfree kit to access phonebook details is a universal code, after all a fair few aftermarket sat navs do it. As far as I understand it I know with my old Hilux, all my nokia and girlfrinds Sony Erisson phones worked fine, but I sold the truck to Bibbs on this forum and his Nokia N series wouldn't work with the phone book, he later identified the fault being with the phones software, but they won't release the update to fix it! That was Alpine based gear, who also supply the BMW kit anyway.. I think if a phone is phone book compatible with one device they pretty much are with all!

Naturally if it doesn't work I'll take it back, and I'll let them know that before hand!

When I bought the 8600 the guy in the shop lied to me and told me that the charger was the new industry stadnard that EVERY mobile phone will have from then on... I have not seen another with it since and as far as i know they STILL don't even sell a car charger for it (which he told me would be along in a weeks time)! Liar!

Edit: there is a name for the phone book feature, it is called PBAP Phone Book Address Profile, it IS an industry standard. The Nokia N series don't support it.

Yeah it is thin, has everything you could want and has taken a beating from me and keeps on going

camera is good quality, size is great, its simple but classy looking so doesnt look stupid when i pull it out of my suit pocket and the Battery life is amazing!

Remember that from 1 December the VAT rate is changing so all the phone suppliers will be reviewing their prices as the nice round numbers will all now be strange amounts.

I have three phones.... all Nokias but I cannot remember their model numbers.

They make calls.... my personal one sends text messages and connects to my car via bluetooth.... the others are work phones and simply for calls.

They work so I have no reasons to change them.... for me they are not fashion items

my work phone is like that .... nokia with no camera, no gprs, no bluetooth, no wired headset

it is brand new and lives in its box in the drawer as it is a POS

Lauren, just looked at the Samsung Tocco - that looks like a real nice phone!

you are right in principle, Steve, but the killer as a phone is have to keep it to the ear - and I don't like that with a mobile

Plus personally, I find a multifuntion device - make a call, listen to music, watch video, surf the web, use IM apps, check email, calender etc all in a single unit, far more effective and productive.

I presume you mean so you can od other things with it... browse net etc etc...

Cause people who talk into their phones like they are walkie talkies should be shot!!! It looks really stupid! :P

I personally like the multifunction device thingy too... lots of items rolled into one... which is why I currently have the N95.. but will hopefully be upgrading to something new come Feb/March

It may be just me, but I get a REALLY hot ear when I use a mobile for any length of time and it's clamped to the side of my head (not literally!) and do wonder if it had fried my brain as well - though that may be too late! Much prefer using a headset

sometimes use it walkie-talkie style but only if NO ONE is around as you do look a bit of a plank doing that sometimes

About the only good thing about the Nokia 8600 is that the antenna is on the back, at the bottom of the phone, so as far away from your ear as possible... I didn't notice the "hot ear" as much on that one, and the all stainless 8800 as I did on previous phones.

I quite like having a phone with a meal case, It feels sturdy and its got to be good for not radiating your head!

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I picked up a C902 today from Vodafone...

I can confirm they work with PBAP, although no-one in the shop knew what this standard was!

Phone seems ok.. But I find it hugely annoying that their is an ugly "vodafone live" shortcut on the desktop that you can't remove, thats also really easy to accidently click on... Has anyone aver re flashed one of these to put the original manufacturers firmware on, instead of the branded service provider stuff?
