03 Avensis Battery Draining Over Night

CAR Make = Toyota Avensis 03

Model = T3-S

My car keeps loosing Battery charge and fails to start even when left for 2 days. I have taken it back to Toyota 3 times and they have changed the Battery each time. so in the last 1 year I've had 2 New Batteries.

Surely it can't be a Battery fault?

I have factory fitted SatNav, A phone Charger, and Pioneer 900BT front console (satnav, entertainment unit) with two head rest screens at the back. I am assuming these should not be draining the battery when the car is off.

Any suggestions as to what I can check for? I don't want to take it back to Toyota just to have the battery changed.

Making sure that absolutely everything is turned off, disconnect the Battery negative lead and put an ammeter between the Battery terminal and the lead, or use a 'clip-on ammeteron the pos cable. This will show you if anything is drawing current from the Battery and flattening it. You may find a small amount of current flow due to time clocks etc. but this should be minimal, typically 0.5 amp or less.

If you have a substantial draw, it is then a case of finding what is still drawing current. Things like boot lights are quite common as you won't see that they are still lit when the switch goes faulty. Have known rear screen heater relays to stick in the on position before (not specifically on Toyota).

Reconnect the battery and use the ammeter to trace any draw by removing the fuses, one at a time, then put the ammeter in the line in place of the fuse (presuming there was a draw showing at the battery)

A 2 amp draw (roughly equivalent to 1 brake light) will flatten a 60Ah. battery in just 30 hours -dead flat!

Maybe the pioneer has not been wired correctly and only goes to standby and not completely off? Maybe disconnect the power supply to this unit completely for a few days.

Good luck, can't see it being another faulty battery.

P.S. When doing the draw test at the battery, make sure doors are all closed or courtesy lights are turned off.

CAUSE and SOLUTION to Battery Drain Problem

OK so I tried to fault find myself and had no luck.

I then took the car to a local garage and they said it will take a day or two to fault find.

They kept the cr for 7 Days and finally managed to locate the fault.

The fault was with Alternator :(

The Diode pack in the alternator had fried and that was the reason for the Battery to go flat so quickly.

The Nice man at the garage reconditioned the alternator and gave me 6 months warranty

I am surprised that the Toyota Garage did not pick this up and changed the batteries 3 times each time advising that the Battery was faulty.

time advising that the battery was faulty.

Glad you got sorted ok. Usually when that happens with the alternator, you get a clue, the ignition light (red light, battery picture) stays on when the ignition is switched off.
