Anyone Else Been Called By Toyota For Ecu Upgrade

The 20k service is transmission oil so they will want to do it on age rather than mileage. I think its a good idea anyway. It should need brake fluid but I understand that is extra.

I don't think the chip will make a difference. All affected RAVs will get the upgrade.

Well Anchs got my Battery trickled at local Mr T alls well now, However asked them to do my ECU upgrade thought I'd better tell them my car is chipped, after much debate + sharp intakes of breath they decided not to do it as it may Damage my ECU, Damage my Chip, or Damage the engine, so phoned Lindop who said no problem they will do it + my brakes, which may need skimming (I'd prefer replacement) on my next service, they also said as its a 2yr/ 20,000 service (its done 9000mls) they can do a 2yr low mileage service  weren't sure of the price but between £150 + £200..

Hi, What is the problem with your brakes? any disc fault seems very premature at only 9000 miles

apparantly the discs are quite soft on 4.3 ravs and at its first service (5000) they reccomended a re-skim, which i was reluctant to do + on advise decided to leave it, if they now need doing i will try to get new discs + pads,, Anchs has had his replaced under warranty Albeit at a greater mileage, he is far more clued up than me

Just a quick note on ECU upgrade. The sticker used is supposed to go on the ECU but on some of these cars its not easy to get to so you might not see it or have one fitted. Its interesting to know what difference, if any, you guys are seeing after its done on your cars.

Yep, if anybody is interested, was expecting to see mine stuck on the air filter box, but found it on the front passenger door pillar (below B post).

The engine might be a little smoother, but that comment is very subjective. Don't think economy has been affected, but also still don't think I have enough data yet to tell, plus also difficult to tell with recent cold snap pulling the mpg down a fair bit.

Despite my earlier optimism, the pack calculated mpg is still reading high by about the same percentage, I believe.

I can't see how making a mod to an ECU will add any more risk with or without a chip. I'm sure Lindops are right to ignore it.

With regard to the brakes, most discs a pretty standard grey cast iron although well made ones do have minimum specs for trace elements. They aren't really soft!!! The fact is that any disc will soon wear a lip on the outer edge and as sure as the friction material is a wearing part so is the mating surface. Mine were replaced because it developed quite a severe judder which was more noticeable on a dual carriageway when braking for intermediate islands - it would judder through the steering and made quite a noise. Part of my problem is that the car does a lot of standing and the discs go red rusty overnight in damp weather. On top of that the pads leave stains where they have been stationary (called depositing) and this where the materials in the pad have reacted with the cast iron of the disc. In most cars this is worn off as the pads act like scrubbers and actually machine the surface layer but this process needs temperature and mine doesn't always see it. RRG Macclesfield were very good and changed both the discs and pads under warranty. This is actually one example where I have to eat my words a bit and another brand of pad which is more aggressive may be a benefit rather than the very stable and high life OE Jap pads.

Same dealer different place!!! You would think they would put them in the same place so any dealer could see the mod has been done with playing "hunt the sticker". I would have dropped the roof lining down and hidden it under there (thats me being sarcastic).

Dealers can check on computer to see if the job has been done if they are unsure. You can also check the ECU ID with diagnostic machine to see if its got the latest software.

If you unplug your ECU (the big jack plug that goes into the black box) then your car goes back to normal mode. You then get a re-flash and plug it back in later ;)

As for disc replacement, dealers are supposed to skim first and if any problems re-occur then replace (unless the disc cannot be skimmed coz it is out of max specification)

Cheers kingo, My chip has a line fuse on the Battery feed so i assume removing that disables my "chip" but anyway its not due a service till the end of MAY/JUNE so i will book it in + get everything done then, I've already spoken to a nice young chap called Steve, who was very helpfull..I'll make sure I call at a pie shop on the way.. Have you got any of those Dixie Chicks on reception yet?

ah well - all this talk of ecus.......

hopefully number 1 gets its ecu piggyback system in the next week. It should be able to take the engine up beyond 300bhp; drop the 1/4 mile time down below my 14.4sec current best; and also give me better mpg. What effect it has on torque and bhp will be interesting-

Several other options are available, and have been suggested to me on the MR2 forum - so I'll look at them for number 2.

Yes but if you put your tongue in the ear of the parts manager he will arrange for you to have all new parts - just don't take it out until he does :P

Bothy

I'm sure you can get a Typhoon ECU on the black market. I have been out tonight but will speak to my mate on that other issue tomorrow!

Oh, I get it. When yer sellling bits thru warranty, then yer called George the Warranty; and when yer offering discounts of 30% yer Daisy the Discounter.....which is why we don't hear much about Daisy nowadays! So selling ecu chips is Shelly Chips???

I think you will actually find it was a muderator who took it off topic, suggesting earlicking

Back on Topic, does the ecu upgrade make a noticeable difference?

Charlie chips

Dear as ****

How much Howard

Back ordered Bob

I answer to pretty much anything.........apart from "Oi You" which somebody mistakenly shouted from the other end of the showroom once............I had to show him the error of his ways and escort him to a side door to re-assess his manners for him

Anyway, getting back on topic about the off topic topic, I forgot AM had climbed to the dizzy heights of muderator, anymore of this off topic nonsense and he I think somebody is on for a :ban: :D:

Some people say there is a slight difference in the feel of the car after a re-flash, but this is a bit subjective, it shouldnt make much difference

I also had this issue Stew, when I joined there was an existing member called Dave M, so I added the dot in between. I believe the memer is non active now.

Got left a message on my machine today from local dealer who supplied my Rav but wont ever be servicing it (ever).

They say Toyota are doing a campaign to upgrade computers (guess she mean't ECU's) and wanted to "get me

booked in ". I'm sure this was mentioned on here recently, but cant remember where. Anybody had this done ?

What was the problem ? Personally I cant see why it can't wait till the next service is due, but knowing this par-

ticular dealer I suspect its job creation time.

yes recd a letter Saturday 7th March say "The engine management system needs an update to improve emissions and should take no longer than an hour"
