Groaning Sounds

Hi,

My 2001 Yaris GS 1.0 makes what can be described as a groaning sound. Its too low pitch to be termed a screeching sound. This happens when the car is moving at low speed 2-3Mph. For example when i am making my way out of a parking slot. The sound only comes when i turn the steering slightly (less than half radius) either way. The sound comes in both reverse and forward gear. The sound still occurs when the clutch is fully compressed. At first it was just a slight noise but now its getting a little louder.

Is it something to do with the power steering? No sounds when i turn the steering when not moving though.

Or is it more to do with the lubrication of certain moving parts Like the timing chain? Mileage is 57000 miles. The sound never occurs at speeds above 5mph.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before. Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Firstly Welcome to TOC

I maybe wrong but it could the anti roll bar link bushes are worn, It is a common problem and you do start hearing rubbing noises etc when your turning. There is a thread about them do a quick search.

Unlikely to be ARBs if its a groaning. Does it do it on full lock or only if wheel is slightly turned? I had a strange sound coming from mine and all it was was the rubber CV boots were dry and sticking to each other a bit on turning. Park your car with the wheels turned at the when point the noise occurrs, jack it up and spin the ropadwheel with your hand and see if you can tell where it's coming from. Obviously you shouldn't get under the car unless you've got axle stands in place.

[in order)

Check your power steering fluid levels.

The belt that drives the power steering pump may be worn or need to be tensioned.

Failing that, it may just be the pump -. live with it or change it.

All other suggestions above do not moan...::-)
