Central Locking

1999 avensis cdx will lock with remote key fob, but red light should flash on dash to say alarm is on but does not,,,, will not unlock with fob has to be unlocked manually with key, lock switch on door panel does nothing at all,,, no fuses gone, interia light ok heeeeelp :

Had a similar problem with my 98 Avensis, where the remote fob was activating/deactivating the alarm but not opening the doors. Had to lock/unlock manually. I saw several threads on this site advising that if it wasn't a fuse then it would be a relay that needed reset by removing it for 10 minutes or so. Before I could do that, my battey went flat overnight on one of the recent cold nights, and when I jump started it the remote central locking problem was fixed! I assume the dead Battery had the same effect as resetting the relay, so maybe disconnecting the Battery for a while could fix it?
