Hello,

I have a Toyota 2.2d Avensis Estate TR 58plate and I have to say it is the worst car I have ever had.

One week from New, puncture. Could not remove the wheel as the locking nuts had been broken when they were put on.

The wheel was damaged when it was finally removed and about three weeks later it was replaced.

Soon afterwards the SatNav started playing up. This has never been resolved depsite Toyota UK getting involved.

This morning the car would not start. Phoned RAC and they say that it was due to the cold. The temp readout was -14deg C. The local radio station said it had been down to -19deg C during the night. I only buy Shell fuel.

All the neighbours cars started. Not all of them petrol.

The car is uncomfortable, the wife especially thinks so. My old car was a Saab so yes I did move from a v comfortable car.

As discussed on here the headlights are the equivalent of candles.

I really wish I had not bought this car. If this is the vaunted Toyota Reliability then it is not very good.

Glad that is off my chest.

Not sure you can blame Toyota for a puncture. Lock nuts seems fair. My Sat Nav went U/S 2 weeks from new, replaced no quibbles by dealer. Comfort wise, I've a knackered spine (a para drop too far) but find the T180 seats very supportive and comfy. Headlights weak but darned better than the Vauxhall Astra the company gives me to drive around in.

hello

in fact the avensis is a decent car for each family.

as to the starting problems you have to think what was wrong and may be the reason is in another etc?

The Shell is not an indicator -- may be you ve got not a winter qualty diesel resulting the fine fuel filter blockiing? Or you have problem with glow plugs etc.

AS to both head light -- yes I agree with you - they are desired to be better !!!!

We are all here to help eachother

Cheers/Igor

I have to say my wifes car has been great so far and is very comfortable. Not as comfey as my S type Jag but then its 20k more expensive.

The build on the Avensis is great apart from the cubby box on the top centre of the dash which lets the trim down bucket loads.

I have a spinal injury also and still find this car perfectly reasonable to travel in. No Nav issues that could not be sorted by the dealer along with a few other niggles but all in all i find it a fantastic buy and a lot better a car than some of the Badge consious brigade are driving around in and with a lot less faults.

Give your dealer a right 8oll1ck1n6 and get your issues sorted before they put you off what is in all accounts a better car than you are giving it credit for.

By the way, I had a Saab once apon a time, Had it three months and after 12 major faults nearly landed it in through the dealers window when i through it back to them for a full refund, So give it a chance or give it back.

I don't even see what your issue is really, You have a new wheel and you need to let the Dealer look at your Nav, not a problem really.

AS to the starting thing, have you checked your oil to see if it needs changed or goes like tar at that low a temperature. I have replaced the Toyota oil with Castrol 0w-30 GTD magnatec which does mke a hell of a differnce to the cars starting abilities and overall smoother running.

Regards Keith.

I currently run my first Toyota, and having had all sorts of different makes in the past and being a time served mechanic, I can honestly say that although the Toyota is a nice enough car, it is by no means exceptional. I don't see what all the hype about Toyota being so good is all about. Yes, it's ok but like every other car, it has it's problems and glitches and is by no means perfect.

I will run this one until it is no longer viable but won't go out of my way to get another, this one was the right car, at the right price at the right time.

I have to disagree with you irishjay, VW's are far from reliable these days i have a 55 plate sharan i had it mot'd by the vw dealer just before the warranty expired and asked them to give it a check to see if there was anything that needed to be done before the warranty expred, it passed the mot after having a £120 indicator bulb replaced!! and no issues reported by vw

The car had its service three weeks later at the same dealer, where i was given a bill for over £300 for the service and was told it needed a further £1200 of work including wheel bearing, drive shaft, lower engine cover etc, funny how these issues came up after the warranty had expired.

I think any car assembled in Europe is going to have issues

From my experience of my previous BRITISH built Avensis T180, I can only say that it was the best built car I have ever owned. It also had the most comfortable seats of any car I've driven (including Jags). I've now got a Japanese built Rav4 and every bit of the dashboard rattles, all the plastics are hard, rigid and appear to be made out of recycled plastic bottles that mark at every touch. The paint is soft and scratches easily and the alloy wheels have hardly seen any lacquer. My wife has a french built Yaris and that suffers from the same build quality problems. So IMO whilst the Avensis may not be perfect, the British built Toyota is best made.

Over the past 22years the wife and I, between us, have owned a total of 9 Toyotas. Have to say in all honesty that, over that time, the build quality of Toyotas has got progressively worse, more especially since they've started building them in UK. This, I suspect, is purely down to cost-cutting considerations, as British engineering used to be the envy of the world. Before the accountants got involved, that is!

Can't comment on other Euro-built Toyotas as I've not owned any.
