Electrical Problem

Back again.

Took my 98 Avensis to a local electrical 'specialist' today.

Problem was that the dome fuse kept blowing - a short somewhere.

Westlands Toyota (Stourbridge) couldn't diagnose last week - the popping fuse meant they couldn't get anything out of the system. Advised could be 4 hrs work and nearly £300.

So, the local chap had it all day, said he replaced the fuse no problem. He drove it around, played with the switches, couldn't get fuse to blow.

So I went to pick it up tonight, and I knew there was still a problem straight away;

car will lock but not unlock from the key fob

central locking now works (locking and unlocking) with key in door

immobiliser light remains flashing when car unlocked

car will start but hazards come on (alarm) but no horn

Interior lights now work

Told the local chap while car still on site and he admitted he hadn't tried locking/unlocking with the fob.

Annoyed!

Not sure whether it's worth leaving it there tonight or finding the fuse that disables the indicators/hazards and carefully driving it home. Either way it's still not right.

Any ideas anyone?

I think you may have a bad earth somewhere so maybe that would be good place to start.

The dome fuse that keeps blowing.. what does it protect? cus it is most likely a bad earth or live in the circuit it protects.

Leave it with him now he knows how to make it blow. Electrical faults are all the same, hours to find, minutes to put right.

Always give as much relevant info as you can i.e. when the fuse blows (if you know). Now he maybe only has 5 miles of wire that could be the problem instead of 25.

I presume that you have the big type key, this will need recoding back to the system and all should return to normal , It will not explain why you had a fuse blow in the first place it is possible that the car now being abit older that running electric windows,c/locking etc these systems put more load on the fuse, things start to stiffen up with age,the dome fuse is only a 7.5 amp you could uprate this to 10 amp but NO more.

Forgive me for asking, but how does a bad earth blow a fuse? A bad earth won't increase current flow through the circuit and as fuses blow when excessive current flows.........

Increased current flow is down to a faulty component drawing too much current or current flowing somewhere it shouldn't e.g. a short circuit (current flowing to earth)

Thanks for the replies chaps.

The dome fuse was blowing but not now - he just put a new fuse in and it's been okay.

It's looking like a problem with the immobiliser and central locking.

I can open the car doors via the driver door lock but not with the fob.

But the immobiliser/alarm does not disarm

I can start the car but the hazards come on so the immob circuit is not doing as it should i.e. cutting the engine.

I've been having a read tonight and tomorrow I'm going to try and reset/recode the immobiliser and keys.

Other than that I'm not sure.

Well I got back to the car this morning and tried the spare key.

It worked.

Locked, unlocked, immobiliser on/off as it should and all seems okay.

So it looks like there is either a fault with the original key, or it needs recoding.

Will try it later.

Problem solved.

Had to reprogram the immobiliser for the key and it works as it should.

Still don't know what blew the dome fuse or what happened to rectify the problem but it's all okay now.

Nice to know the outcome Jemmo, hope it all stays ok for you.
