Aircon Compressor

Hi all, new member here . I have an AVENSIS 2.0 D4D on an 05 plate which I've had from new and it is now out of warranty. I've had no problems with it untill now . The Aircon compressor is making a god awful racket which disapears once the revs go over about 1500 rpm or you switch the aircon on . I reckon it's the clutch in the compressor thats making the racket and the aircon is still working ok apart from the noise . Is the clutch replaceable or does any one know of anywhere in Essex/London that can repair or recon these units and at what cost .Has anyone else had this problem with toyota aircon units . The car has done 125k trouble free miles so far and has been regularly serviced .

hello

in case yr service has been regutar & legal - MrT was to alert on this coming issue & recomend you to have this compressor serviced.

OK now you're face to face with that. There are two ways - to inspect it at MrT or at VERY reliable company dealing with A/C service/repair.

May be anothers will recomend another way - just keep waiting.

It might be the bearing where the pully is as the grease starts to come out of it with it going hot and cold with the engine temp.

I have done some research on this today and it seems that this is a common fault on this model . However the compressor can be by passed using a belt from a car not fitted with a/c .Second hand units are rarer than Rocking Horse S*** and no gaurantee that they are not near end of life . New replacement a/c compressor is an expensive option .......New Unit , regas and labour is over 1K . They all seem to fail around the 120k mile mark and yes it is the clutch inside the compressor that has failed .

Not 100% sure with Toyota but most others the clutch, pulley and bearings can be changed on the compressor without a degas as they are all external. When removed they leave the compressor with its driveshaft exposed.

The pulley runs on the bearings without turning the driveshaft, (thats what makes the noise) and locks to the shaft when the clutch engages.

The other option, like you say, is to fit a shorter belt that doesnt go around the aircon.

many companies will service (refurbish) the compressor clutch assembly for around £40 .

good luck .

i have the same problem here .. took it to nationwide auto center and they told me that it was a belt and a tensioner ..changed them for 110 pounds and after driving for 10 mins the horrible rattle noise comes while pulling out or in idle but when i press the gas pedal it goes away. what is this issue?? where to go and get it fixed.

hello

it looks that something was not tighten well.

and that brings to a resonance with idle revs.
