Gear Box Pipe, Whats Its Purpose?

I've got one like that on the gearbox on the supercharged 4A-GZE in my Corolla - it's an oil cooler for the transmission oil.

On the petrol it goes to an oil cooler but on the diesel which dissipates heat better it loops back. It comes from the oil pump and still has to be connected so the oil is fed to the shafts in the gearbox.

A Har!!! so its a cheap attempt at an oil cooler just for the diesel gearbox, So do diesels run a lot cooler than petrol engines?

The diesel engines are more thermally efficient than petrols. In other words most of the heat they produce is used in creating power and is sent out through the exhaust. The newer 2.2s are so thermally efficient that they take an awful long time to warm up and have to have an electric element in the heater to speed up the demisting process.

The pipe is not really a cheap oil cooler. The gearboxes have an oil pump that forces oil to some of the shafts and gears. This is actually a high spec feature as "more conventional" designs rely on oil from the countershaft being physically thrown up onto the mainshaft. In this case anyone who attempts to coast for instance could seize the gearbox through oil starvation. This box with a pump is far more sophisticated and potentially reliable. However, although the running temperature allows the oil cooler to be omitted from the diesels, the loop pipe must exist to stop the gearbox from being starved of oil - it is a very necessary feature.

This is the pipe {so im told by toyota} if you have the vibration problem coming through the gearstick at around 60, is causing the problem

Right so it actually has a purpose, I did`nt know that about the shafts, I though oil was just pumped round it to be cooled. Its all good to know. :thumbsup:
