Ac Problems 2005 Avensis D4d

Purchased avensis D4D new oct 2005,noticed gas smell inside car, returned to dealer said they could find nothing wrong and would probably go away, after some weeks smell eventually disappeared.

some months back gas smell reappeared but only intermittantly over days and then stopped.

all was well again until jan this year when we noticed clanking noise in engine. We phoned dealer regarding this issue and we were asked if noise stopped when ac was switched on we told them yes and they said it was probably compressor unit although it was highly unusual to go in car so new. They asked to have car brought to them and they would see if toyota would cover as it was only a couple of months out of warranty and would probably cost approx 2000 euros to repair. They phoned back one week later to say toyota declined to cover.

Decided to have look at engine compartment and noticed ac fluid level was below min.

if someboby can help out there my questions are:

1 does fluid level have any relevance to problem either now or when smells occured

2 if so should dealer have checked at last service

3 Is this problem common in avensis?

2 what would be the best course to follow from here?

A/C fluid level? A/C is filled with gas, although this gas is fluid under pressure how do you know it's below min? Where are you checking it? I suspect you are checking something other than the A/C, possibly P/S?

You say the noise goes off when A/C is switched on, this points to the problems being with the bearings in the A/C pulley assembly. When the A/C is off, the pulley rotates on bearings on the shaft of the compressor but not turning the compressor. When switched on, a magnetic clutch on the front of the pulley, locks the pulley to the shaft and turns the compressor. In this state the pulley bearings are stationary in relation to the compressor shaft and pulley, hence no noise.

These can usually be replaced without the need for a compressor change or even a degas.

Toyota dealer is probably pricing to change the whole compressor unit and regas the system.

Try finding a local Air Con specialist for a better solution. If all else fails, fit a shorter belt that bypasses the A/C. Your local friendly independant garage should be able to assist.
