Ask if any work has been done on the ingnition. Not sure excactly what the problem is, but both mine and my brother's Avensis 99 had problems with the ingnition, allthough they don't share the same engine. Mine being a 2.0, his being a 1.8.

Oh, and timing belt ofcourse

To hamish262001,

From memory potential ignition problem is caused via disc at base of ignition unit playing up when key turned, not a major problem. Knocking noise from rear could be rear A/R/Bar bush or link, they wear pretty quickly front & back depending on condition of your local roads. They are a very good all-round car but as with anything of a certain age watch out for rust & general wear & tear. As with all cars make sure all paperwork is in order & carry out HPI check.

Regards, Beagh.
