Engine Light Came On.

Hi Guys

First post so here goes.

Used the wifes Avensis today, it's the first time it has moved in 2 weeks.

On the run it smelt like rotten eggs so I gave it a few hard accelerations to see if the smell went. After a few miles the engine light has come on.

Car running fine, 1.8VVti with 88,000 on the clock X regd.

I don't have the time to take it to a garage this week and the Mrs needs it for nursery runs.

Is there a fuse I can pull to clear all the codes and see if it comes back as we don't have radio code.

Thanks

Steve

Please help guys the Mrs is saying she won't drive the car.

You could try disconnecting the Battery (earth lead is safest) for 10 minutes. When you reconnect codes should be cleared. If the fault is still there the light will reappear before long. I believe the radio is not coded unless you have installed a non Toyota one. Check the forums for the radio code issue but I think it is correct.

when I picked up my 57 plate Avensis I specifically asked about radio codes & was told that they don't have any.

disconnecting the negative terminal on the Battery and replacing after 10 mins works but dont know how long? Our 2004 2litre auto done 25000 miles and have been taking it back to Toyota for this rectifying ,must have done this five times in past year while warranty was on.Done it again t,day so i disconnected Battery and the light has gone out, makes me think that this is all the dealers do and charge you loads of money.

The light will always come back on if there is a fault still there, it's just a matter fo time until it rears its ugly little head again.

As for the toyota dealers, they may not be getting to the bottom of the fault but I'm sure they don't just disconnect the Battery, they will be more sophisticated and turn it off with their diagnostic equipment

That might be all they are doing though if they can't find anything definite.

Pulling fuses or disconnecting Battery will not clear error codes, it may well switch off MIL light, but that's all. Error codes will still be retained in ECM memory, you would be better off going to local garage and having your codes read & cleared if you wish. If you have any potential problems light may well come back on again. Warning light coming on does not mean your engine is ready to go bang, loose connection (open circuit) can potentially turn light on if registered in ECM enough times.

Regards, Beagh.

From your description (rotten eggs) and the engine light, it sounds like your cat has failed/on it's way out.

Rather expensive for OEM part and dealer fit I'm afraid.

Hi steve,

I cant help you with fault...I have just bought Avensis and engine manage ment light keeps coming on..was real worried..than i ordered car diagnostic tool ..£25 eBay..just tried and found the faults...maybe your best starting point is to do similar perhaps...as Toyota charge about £48 ...just to diagnose...Hope this helps...I will now post codes and someone can maybe help with my problem..

Dont talk rubbish, if its an intermittent fault then the light may well come back on again - not dealers fault.

As said above, it will only turn the MIL off - it wont clear the codes, these will be stored as history DTC's in the ECU (all readable using Toyota's Intellgent Tester)

You pay for the labour and use of the very expensive tester that they use when you go for diagnostics :)

Mart.

As said above, could be the start of a CAT convertor fault. Sometimes you can clear the code and will be ok for a few hundred miles but does come back. Best bet is to get the main dealer to have a look over it with the proper machine.
