Hi guys i have a loud humming noise coming from the front of my 1999 1.6 avensis,it comes in when u drive over 45 mph and would seem to be coming from the front passanger side, the noise dose not go away if u clutch and take the car out of gear and allow it to coast, the better the road and the smoother it is the louder the noise seems to be.drive under 45 mph and it is not there at all,i changed the rear hubs thinking it was a back bearing but its no better,i am wondering is there any way to tell if this might be the gear box or a bearing in the front, have just lost my job and money is a little tight so want to try and fix this problen before it gets any worse, any help would be great...ps car has done 65000 miles

If it's a wheel bearing, they usually get louder when you corner. If you can get on a quiet, smooth road get up to a reasonable speed, dip the clutch and zig zag left and right. If it gets louder as the weight transfers, it's more than likely a wheel bearing starting to get noisy. jack up each front wheel and check for play, spin the wheel and listen for noise. If you still can't decide which side it is, let it develop, it's not that bad yet.

Hope this is some help.

Thanks for the reply Q.S,I did jack the front up and the bearings seem fine to spin but i know bearings can be a bugger to pin point,i am more afraid it is a gearbox or something like that,is there anything i can do to check it ? i do intend to change the oil in it this weekend...

Symptoms don't sound like gearbox unless it is a diff carrier bearing. See what comes out in the gearbox oil, if there is an excess of metal filings........ your fears may be right. Wheel bearings are far more common than gearbox problems.
