Which D4d Do I Buy?

Since owning my 1998 Avensis i'm so happy with it that I thought I will get a newer one. It has to be an estate due to my Bullmastiff & German Shepherd being taken everywhere in it!

I was looking on eBay at some of the D4D's, some are saying 110bhp, others 113bhp and there are some saying 148bhp although this says D4D 2.2. Which is the best all rounder, fuel, speed and creature comforts..... I would really like cruise control.

Many thanks in advance

Well i have the 2.2 D4D. Love it best diesel i have had. Put your foot down to the floor in 1st has very good torque. 6 speed gearbox and cruise control great for the motor way. The only downside is it has bad fuel economy for city driving. I get 30-34mpg. I got 60mpg on the motorway once. But normally gives about 40+.

I have a 2006 T3-X, 2.2 D-4D Estate. This has everything I need in terms of creature comforts - dual zone climate, electric windows, CD player etc. I went for the 2.2 which allows me to still have at least some chance of overtaking caravans etc. when on holiday with the car is fully laden. About town I get around 35-40mpg, rising to just over 50 on long runs (according to the computer that is). I think the top model (T-spirit) may have cruise control but I didn't think it was worth the extra money. I definitely wouldn't but the T3-S since you're paying over the odds for a built in sat-nav when you could just buy a Tom-Tom for 100 quid.

Hope that helps,

Ross.

Yeah i agree with you on the Sat Nav because the discs go out of date within the year. I wanted one with leather seats so the T-spirit was my choice.

To Mastiff,

Just talking engines here ( standard of trim down to yourself ) i would opt for the last of the 1CD-FTV cambelt driven engines. Early model has 116bhp & if my memory serves me right later model had bhp increase to 126bhp. I think the last of these may have been dropped from options around late 05 into 06, when engines went over too chain drive. Lots of people complain about fuel consumption on later chain drive engines ie:2.2 ltr, I never really went along with this, just putting it down to the fact that the more units you sell the more likely that you will have a few Friday afternoon cars get through the system with potential faults. But living in my location, Toyota-Land, have started to become aware of some very un happy people who think the fuel consumption on these vehicles is awful. My way of thinking is why take a chance, of course you will have thousands of buyers who you will never hear from as they don't have problem with later engines, so they will not be of a mind to seek out forum to look for help or opinion from other owners.

Sorry for long winded answer, just something for you to think about. my car with 116bhp engine averages around 46/48 mpg on short trips & 54/56 mpg on longer steady trips.

Regards, Beagh.

I think that the complaints re. poor economy are really confined to the T180 with it's DPF.

I'm averaging around 42-43mpg & that's a lot of very short trips or urban stop start work.If there is a lot of motorway work it's ~48-50mpg.

I have had the 1.8 petrol estate in original form and Mk 2 form for about 5 years now and have just (in last 3 days) traded in for a 2.0 D4D estate on a 58 plate. So far I have done about 600 miles (not my normal mileage!) and it is A1. Using the cruise control to help (which comes on all diesels I think) if you are happy to do 65-70 on the motorway you'll get over 60mpg - I did! I'm also happy with the mid range acceleration. Easy to keep up with others in the outside lane. The cruise control is well worth it - I did 3 hours motorway driving without a stop and felt as fresh as a daisy. Mine is the TR which has loads of toys and feautures. The T180 looks the job but you loose the top MPG and pay in insurance etc for a little bit of leather and privacy glass.... The 2.2 is probably great, but I feel the 2.0 is a great all rounder. One happy customer here (so far!) :D

To Mastiff,

Yes, stand corrected. The potential problems would appear to be with T180 & 5th injector that uses fresh diesel to burn off crud in the particle filter, this would appear to defeat the object of running a diesel in the first place. Have looked through previous postings & chain drive 2 ltr does not appear to have many complaints, also showing up as a good car fuel wise by "aki". To my mind a modern diesel should be giving 50+ mpg easily, unless going for big engined German cars, otherwise sort of defeats the object of buying one.

Regards, Beagh.
