Tow-bar Wiring.

Have been fitting tow-bars to the Mk2 Avensis for some years now. Due to canbus wiring i have always used 7-pin relay covertor due to as stated, the wiring protocal. Was told by Toyota dealer that this was required, just checked faulty light on towing board only to find no relay fitted to car. Have i been wasting my time? can any Toyota mechanic or anybody who has had tow-bar fitted confirm this either way please. Will save time & money if so.
